Disassembly and Assembly of Lower Valve Body

COMPONENTS





DISASSEMBLY OF LOWER VALVE BODY



1. REMOVE LOWER VALVE BODY PLATE AND GASKETS.




2. REMOVE COOLER BY PASS VALVE AND SPRING.
3. REMOVE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE AND SPRING.




4. REMOVE THE FOUR CHECK BALLS
5. REMOVE PRIMARY REGULATOR VALVE




a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.




b. Remove the sleeve and plunger.




c. Remove the spring and valve.

NOTE: Note the number of adjusting rings.

6. REMOVE SECONDARY REGULATOR VALVE



a. Remove the retainer and plug.




b. Remove the valve and spring.

7. REMOVE 1 - 2 SHIFT VALVE



a. Remove the retainer and plug.




b. Remove the 1-2 shift over valve, upper valve and spring.

8. REMOVE LOW COAST SHIFT VALVE



a. Remove the retainer and plug.




b. Remove the valve.

9. REMOVE OVERDRIVE SEQUENCE VALVE



a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the plug.




c. Remove the valve and spring.

10. REMOVE DETENT REGULATOR VALVE



a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the plug.




c. Remove detent regulator valve and spring.




11. REMOVE 2 - 3 SHIFT VALVE
a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the valve and spring.

12. REMOVE INTERMEDIATE SHIFT VALVE



a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.




b. Remove the plug and valve.

13. REMOVE LOCK-UP SIGNAL VALVE



a. Remove the pin with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the plug.




c. Remove the valve and spring.

14. REMOVE THIRD COAST SHIFT VALVE



a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.




b. Remove the two valve and spring.

15. REMOVE 3 - 4 SHIFT VALVE



a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the plug.




c. Remove the 3 - 4 shift valve.


INSPECT VALVE SPRINGS






- Check for damage, squareness, rust and distorted coils.
- Measure the spring free height and replace if less than that shown in the table.


ASSEMBLY OF LOWER VALVE BODY
1. INSTALL PRIMARY REGULATOR VALVE



a. Install the adjusting rings and spring seat.

NOTE: Install the same number of adjusting rings as were removed.

b. Place the valve into the bore in the horizontal position.




c. Stand the valve body upward and push the valve into the bore until its tip touches the bore.
d. Install the valve spring.




e. Insert the plunger with the short end first. Make sure that it is fully inserted: the plunger should be recessed inside the sleeve.




f. Install the sleeve with the plunger.
g. Make sure that the regulator valve fits flush with the bore.
h. Install the retainer.




2. INSTALL SECONDARY REGULATOR VALVE
a. Install the spring and valve.
b. Install the plug and retainer




3. INSTALL 1 - 2 SHIFT VALVE
a. Install the spring and upper valve.
b. Install the lower valve flat end first.
c. Install the plug and retainer.




4. INSTALL LOW COAST SHIFT VALVE
a. Install the valve small end first.
b. Install the plug and retainer.




5. INSTALL OVERDRIVE SEQUENCE VALVE
a. Install the spring and valve.
b. Install the plug and retainer.

6. INSTALL DETENT REGULATOR VALVE



a. Install the spring and detent regulator valve with small end first.




b. Install retainer.




7. INSTALL INTERMEDIATE SHIFT VALVE
a. Install the valve small end first.
b. Coat the retainer with petroleum jelly.
c. Install the plug flat end first and install the retainer




8. INSTALL 2 - 3 SHIFT VALVE
a. Install the spring and valve.
b. Install the plug and retainer.




9. INSTALL LOCK-UP SIGNAL VALVE
a. Install the spring and valve.
b. Install the plug and pin.




10. INSTALL THIRD COAST SHIFT VALVE
a. Install the two valves as shown.
b. Install the spring.
c. Install the plug and retainer.




11. INSTALL 3 - 4 SHIFT VALVE
a. Install the valve flat end first.
b. Install the plug and retainer.







12. CHECK RETAINERS AND LOCATING PIN
Make sure that the retainers and pin are installed correctly.




13. INSTALL SPRING AND COOLER BY-PASS VALVE
14. INSTALL SPRING AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE




15. INSTALL THE FOUR CHECK BALLS AS SHOWN
Install the four rubber balls in the position shown in the figure.
