Disassembly and Assembly of Upper Valve Body
COMPONENTSDISASSEMBLY OF UPPER VALVE BODY
1. REMOVE THROTTLE VALVE RETAINER AND CHECK BALLS
NOTE:
A140E: Two check balls
A140L: Three check balls
2. REMOVE LOCK-UP RELAY VALVE
a. Remove the retainer for the plug with a magnetic finger and remove the plug.
b. Remove the lockup relay valve, control valve and spring.
c. Remove the retainer for the sleeve with a magnetic finger, and remove the sleeve.
3. REMOVE CUT-BACK VALVE
a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the cut-back valve.
c. (A140E) Remove the spring
4. REMOVE THROTTLE MODULATOR VALVE
a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the plug, valve and spring.
5. REMOVE ACCUMULATOR CONTROL VALVE
a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the plug, spring and valve.
6. REMOVE LOW COAST MODULATOR VALVE
a. Remove the pin with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the plug, spring and valve.
7. REMOVE SECOND COAST MODULATOR VALVE
a. Remove the retainer with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the spring and valve.
8. REMOVE THROTTLE CAM
a. Loosen the bolt.
b. Remove the cam, spring and collar.
9. REMOVE KICK-DOWN VALVE AND SPRING
a. Remove the pin with a magnetic finger.
b. Remove the kick-down valve with the sleeve and spring.
10. REMOVE THROTTLE VALVE
11. REMOVE SPRING AND ADJUSTING RINGS
Note the number of adjusting rings installed.
INSPECTION OF UPPER VALVE BODY
INSPECT VALVE SPRINGS
- Inspect for damage, squareness, rust and collapsed coils.
- Measure the springs free height and replace if less than what is shown in the table.
ASSEMBLY OF UPPER VALVE BODY
1. INSTALL LOCK-UP RELAY VALVE
a. Install the sleeve into the bore.
b. Coat the retainer with petroleum jelly and install it onto the end of the sleeve.
c. Install the control valve, spring and lock-up relay valve into the bore in horizontal position.
d. Push in the relay valve by hand until the control valve touches the end of the sleeve.
e. Install the plug and retainer.
2. INSTALL CUT-BACK VALVE
a. (A140E) Install the spring.
b. Install the cut-back valve cup side first.
c. Install the plug and retainer.
3. INSTALL THROTTLE MODULATOR VALVE
a. Install the spring and valve.
b. Install the plug and retainer.
4. INSTALL ACCUMULATOR CONTROL VALVE
a. Install the valve and spring.
b. Install the plug and retainer.
5. INSTALL LOW COAST MODULATOR VALVE
a. Install the valve and spring.
b. Install the plug and pin.
6. INSTALL SECOND COAST MODULATOR VALVE
a. Install the valve and spring.
b. Compress the spring and allow the retainer to fall into place.
NOTE: Make sure that the retainer fully covers the end of the spring.
7. INSTALL THROTTLE VALVE AND RETAINER
a. Install the throttle valve.
b. Coat the retainer with petroleum jelly and install it into place in the valve body.
8. INSTALL ADJUSTING RINGS AND SPRING ON THROTTLE VALVE SHAFT
a. Install the same number of adjusting rings as were removed during disassembly.
b. Slip the spring over the end of the valve shaft. Compress and slide into place.
9. INSTALL SPRING INTO THROTTLE VALVE
10. INSTALL KICK-DOWN VALVE WITH SLEEVE
11. INSTALL PIN TO HOLD SLEEVE IN PLACE
Coat the pin with petroleum jelly.
12. ASSEMBLE THROTTLE CAM
a. Insert the sleeve through one side of the cam.
b. Install the spring with the hook through the hole in the cam.
13. INSTALL CAM ASSEMBLY ON UPPER VALVE BODY
Make sure the spring ends are positioned correctly. Tighten the bolt.
Torque: 75 kg.cm (65 in.lb, 7.4 N.m)
14. MAKE SURE THAT CAM MOVES ON ROLLER OF DOWN SHIFT PLUG
15. INSTALL CHECK BALLS

16. MAKE SURE THAT PINS AND RETAINER ARE INSTALLED CORRECTLY
