Valve Clearance: Adjustments

Fig. 7 Measuring valve clearances with crankshaft at TDC.:

Fig. 8 Measuring valve clearances with crankshaft 360 ATDC.:

3S-GE & 3S-GTE ENGINE
Adjust intake valve clearance to .010 inch and exhaust valve clearance to .012 inch.

Valve lash should be adjusted with engine cold, using procedure outlined below.
1. Remove cylinder head covers.
2. Rotate crankshaft pulley until piston of No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Groove on pulley should align with ``0'' mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. Ensure valve lifters on No. 1 cylinder are loose and valve lifters on No. 4 cylinder are tight. If not, rotate crankshaft 1 complete revolution and align marks as described.
3. Measure clearance between camshaft lobes and adjusting shims of valves shown, Fig. 7.
Intake valve clearance should fall between .006-.010 inch and exhaust valve clearance should fall between .008-.012 inch. Record any measurements that exceed specifications.
4. Rotate crankshaft pulley one revolution, then align marks as previously described.
5. Measure clearance between camshaft lobes and adjusting shims of valves shown, Fig. 8.
Intake valve clearance should fall between .006-.010 inch and exhaust valve clearance should fall between .008-.012 inch.
Record any measurements that exceed specifications.
6. For any valve clearances that exceed specifications, rotate crankshaft pulley to position camshaft lobe upwards over that particular valve.
7. Using tool No. 09248-70011, depress valve lifter, then using a small screwdriver, remove adjusting shim. Prior to depressing valve lifter, position notch towards spark plug.
8. Using a suitable micrometer, measure thickness of removed shim. To determine thickness of shim necessary to obtain correct valve clearance use the following formula. Shims are available in 27 sizes in increments of .0020 inch ranging from .0787 inch to .1299 inch.
Intake; N = T + (A - .008 inch).
Exhaust; N = T + (A -.010 inch).
N = Thickness of replacement shim.
T = Thickness of original shim.
A = Valve clearance measured.
9. Using tool No. 09284-70011, depress valve lifter and install adjusting shim.
10. Repeat procedure on remaining out of specification valve clearances.
11. Recheck valve clearances, then reinstall cylinder head covers.
