A/T - Torque Converter Lock-Up Clutch Not Releasing
TRANSMISSIONREFERENCE AND CLUTCH NUMBER 008(REVISED) DATE 8-23-85
MODEL MX, MA, AE, YR
APPLICABILITY:
MODEL PROD. DATE ATM
MX 08/84 A43DE
MA 08/84 A43DE
AE 08/84 A42DL
YR 08/84 A44DL
CONDITION:
The torque converter lock-up clutch does not release when slowing to a stop in any range (except Park and Neutral).
POSSIBLE CAUSE:
Foreign material can cause the lock-up relay valve to stick in the relay valve sleeve. This may be the result of an abrasive contact between the plastic check ball #3, P/N: 35428-30020, and the metal compression spring P/N: 90504-04005.
CORRECTION: DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR PROCEDURES
^ Diagnosis procedures to check for lock-up clutch not releasing.
- Check automatic transmission fluid for correct level.
- Disconnect the ECT ECU computer.
- With the transmission in "P" range, start the engine.
- With the brake pedal pressed, shift the transmission from "P" to "D" range.
- If the lock-up clutch does not release, repairs to the valve body may be necessary.
- Reconnect the ECT ECU computer.
Small Lower Valve Body Cover Plate:
REPAIR PROCEDURES:
^ Repairs can be made without removing the transmission.
- Drain transmission fluid into clean container.
- Examine for particles in the fluid.
- Remove oil pan.
- Check for particles in the oil pan. Clean pan and magnet if necessary.
- Remove entire valve body (refer to correct R/M for procedure).
Remove the small lower valve body cover plate, to gain access to the lock-up relay valve and sleeve assembly retaining pin. Inspect for any foreign material and clean this area as necessary.
Small Lower Valve Body Plate Removed:
REPAIR PROCEDURES:
- Remove the lock-up relay valve and sleeve.
Lock-up Relay Valve:
REPAIR PROCEDURES:
- Check the relay valve and sleeve for sticking, scratches and spring particles.
- If scratches or sticking are evident, clean and polish the valve and sleeve surfaces. If the valve or sleeve surfaces cannot be cleaned and polished for smooth operation, replace the valve and sleeve as an assembly.
- Remove upper front valve body and upper rear valve body along with the valve body plate and gaskets. Watch for check balls, retainer and pins in all valve bodies.
Lower Valve Body:
REPAIR PROCEDURES:
- Remove the #3 check ball and spring from the lower valve body.
The vehicle will operate without the #3 check ball and spring.. Check for and remove any spring particles in this area.
- Reassemble the valve body with the repaired or new lock-up relay valve and sleeve. Use new gaskets. (Refer to correct R/M for procedure).
- Check the remaining valves in the valve body for free movement and correct travel.
- Reinstall the valve body into the transmission.
- Reinstall the oil pan and oil pan plug.
- Fill transmission with automatic transmission fluid (Dexron#ll).
The #3 check ball and spring have been deleted in production for the following model applications:
