Timing Belt: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Drain coolant from radiator and engine block. On models with 3A-C engine, remove radiator.
2. On vehicles equipped with power steering, remove fan shroud, if equipped, power steering pump mounting bolts and drive belt.
3. On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, loosen idler pulley nut, adjusting bolt and remove drive belt.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly.
5. Remove water pump pulley and drive belt.
6. Disconnect PCV hose from PCV valve.
7. Remove bolts, cylinder head cover, gasket and plug.
8. On vehicles equipped with power steering, remove No. 2 crankshaft pulley.

9. Set No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Ensure rocker arms of No. 1 cylinder are loose. If not, turn crankshaft one full turn.
10. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt and pulley.
11. Remove timing belt cover bolts, timing belt covers and gasket. If timing belt is to be reused, draw arrow on belt to indicate direction of rotation and make alignment marks between timing belt and camshaft sprocket and timing belt and camshaft sprocket.
12. Remove timing belt guide, timing belt and idler pulley. Do not allow oil or water to contact timing belt, sprockets or idler pulley.
13. Remove crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.

Installation

1. Check timing belt for damage, replace if necessary.
2. Align camshaft dowel pin with notch on camshaft timing sprocket.
3. Install and torque camshaft timing sprocket bolt to 29-39 ft. lbs.

5. Install crankshaft timing sprocket, then align TDC marks on oil pump body and crankshaft timing sprocket, Fig. 83.
6. Install timing idler pulley and tension spring. Pry timing belt idler pulley toward the left and temporarily tighten the bolt.

7. Install timing belt. Loosen timing belt idler pulley bolt. If timing belt is being reused, install in direction marked with reference marks aligned, Fig. 84.
8. Temporarily install crankshaft sprocket bolt and turn crankshaft, in normal direction of rotation, two revolutions TDC to TDC.

9. Check valve timing. Ensure each sprocket aligns with the marks as shown in Fig. 85.
10. Torque idler pulley bolt to 22-32 ft. lbs.

Fig. 86 Checking timing belt deflection. 3A-C, 4A-C & 4A-LC:

11. Measure timing belt deflection at the middle of the long side of the belt, Fig. 86.
12. Timing belt deflection should be .24 - .28 inch at 4.4 lb. (6-7 mm at 2 kg).
13. If measurement obtained is not within specification, loosen idler pulley bolt, then move idler pulley to obtain correct timing belt deflection. Torque idler pulley bolt to 22-32 ft. lbs.
14. Apply sealer to No. 1 camshaft bearing cap and plug.
15. Install plug, gasket and cylinder head cover. Connect hose to PCV valve.
16. Install timing belt guide and lower cover. Install timing belt cover gasket and upper cover.
17. Install crankshaft pulley and bolt. Torque bolt to 88-94 ft. lbs.
18. Install crankshaft No. 2 pulley (if equipped), water pump pulley and drive belt.
19. Install power steering pump mounting bolts and drive belt. Install fan shroud.
20. Install air cleaner assembly.
