Timing Belt Installation

1. Check timing belt for damage, replace if necessary.
2. Install oil pump drive shaft sprocket. Torque bolt to 16 ft. lbs.
3. Using tool number 09214-60010 or equivalent and hammer, drive crankshaft sprocket onto crankshaft.
4. Temporarily install idler pulley and tension spring. Push idler pulley toward the alternator and finger tighten idler pulley bolt.
5. Install timing belt onto crankshaft sprocket. If belt is being reused, ensure direction of rotation is correct and reference marks made during removal are aligned.
6. Install No. 1 timing cover, then the air conditioner compressor bracket.
7. Install crankshaft pulley. Torque pulley bolt to specifications.
8. Remove oil filler cap, then exhaust side cylinder head cover and gasket.
9. Install camshaft sprockets and timing belt, noting the following:

Fig. 112 Camshaft sprocket installation. 5M-GE engine:

a. Ensure alignment hole on No. 2 camshaft journal housing is aligned with No. 2 camshaft journal, Fig. 110. If not, temporarily install camshaft sprockets as shown in Fig. 112 and insert alignment pin into pin hole. Turn camshaft sprocket until No. 2 camshaft journal housing and No. 2 camshaft journal holes are aligned.
b. Install camshaft sprockets with timing belt guides facing in the directions shown in Fig. 112.

c. Ensure No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Align marks on No. 2 timing belt cover with marks on camshaft sprockets, Fig. 104, and mark on crankshaft pulley with 0° mark on timing tab of No. 1 timing belt cover.
d. Install timing belt onto camshaft sprockets. If belt is being reused, ensure direction of rotation is correct and reference marks made during removal are aligned.

e. Loosen idler pulley bolt and stretch timing belt. This will occur when the idler pulley bolt is loosened. Torque idler pulley bolt to 36 ft. lbs. Ensure timing belt tension at points A and B are approximately equal, Fig. 109.

Fig. 111 Installing pin through camshaft sprocket and into camshaft. 5M-GE engine:

f. Insert alignment pin through camshaft sprockets and into the camshafts. There are five alignment pin holes on the camshafts and sprockets. Select one overlapped camshaft and sprocket alignment hole and insert pin into it, Fig. 111. If there are no overlapping alignment holes, select a hole which is nearly overlapped. Turn crankshaft slightly, to overlap the alignment holes and insert pin. Turning the crankshaft to overlap the alignment holes will change crankshaft sprocket angle approximately 3°.
g. Using tool number 09278-54011 or equivalent to prevent camshaft sprockets from turning, install and torque camshaft sprocket bolts to 51 ft. lbs.
10. Loosen idler pulley bolt, then turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation two times and tighten idler pulley bolt.

11. Check valve timing and belt tension. Refer to ``Valve Timing Check & Fine Adjustment'' for procedure.
12. Install exhaust side cylinder head cover gasket and cover. Install oil filler cap.
13. Install No. 3 timing belt cover gasket and cover.
14. Reverse steps 1 through 5 to complete installation procedure.
