Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Testing and Inspection


VEHICLE DOES NOT MOVE IN ANY FORWARD RANGE

1. Incorrect shift linkage adjustment.
2. Valve body malfunction.
3. Defect in front clutch piston or front clutch.
4. Defect in No. 2 one-way clutch.

VEHICLE DOES NOT MOVE IN REVERSE RANGE

1. Incorrect shift linkage adjustment.
2. Defect in valve body and/or primary regulator.
3. Defect in oil pump.
4. Defect in rear clutch components.
5. Brake No. 3 pistons.

VEHICLE DOES NOT MOVE IN ANY RANGE

1. Incorrect shift linkage adjustment.
2. Parking lock pawl not disengaging.
3. Defective torque converter.
4. Defect in clutches, brake bands or planetary gear.
5. Defect in valve body.
6. Defective oil pump.
7. Internal leakage in transmission.

VEHICLE MOVES EITHER FORWARD OR REARWARD WITH SHIFT LEVER IN NEUTRAL

1. Incorrect shift linkage adjustment.
2. Defect in manual valve in valve body.
3. Defect in front clutch (vehicles which move forward).
4. Defect in rear clutch (vehicles which move rearward).

HARSH ENGAGEMENT INTO ANY RANGE

1. Improper throttle cable adjustment.
2. Defective accumulator pistons, seals and/or springs.
3. Defect in valve body primary valve.
4. Defect in valve body pressure relief valve.

SCREECHING OR WHINING SOUND WHICH INCREASES WITH ENGINE SPEED

1. Broken converter drive plate.
2. Defect in oil pump.
3. Internal transmission damage. Do not operate engine when transmission is making noise, as additional serious damage can result to transmission.

KNOCKING, METALLIC OR GRINDING NOISES

Do not operate engine when transmission is making noises, as additional serious damage can result.
1. Broken converter drive plate.
2. Defective torque converter.
3. Defective one-way clutches.
4. Defective planetary gears.
5. Worn bushings.
6. Defective oil pump.

INTERMITTENT SQUAWK

Do not operate engine when transmission is making noises, as additional serious damage can result.
1. Broken converter drive plate.
2. Defective clutch plates and brake discs.

DELAYED UPSHIFTS, DOWNSHIFTS FROM 3RD TO 2ND & THEN SHIFTS BACK TO 3RD

1. Incorrect throttle cable adjustments.
2. Throttle cam and cable not operating smoothly.
3. Defective governor, or obstructed governor oil passages.
4. Primary regulator and pressure relief valve.
5. Secondary regulator and throttle valve.

SLIPS DURING 1-2 UPSHIFTS

1. Manual linkage incorrectly adjusted.
2. Incorrectly adjusted throttle cable.
3. Defective primary regulator.
4. Internal transmission damage.
5. Defective one-way clutch.
6. Defective No. 2 brake piston O-ring.

SLIPS ON 2-3 UPSHIFTS

1. Manual linkage incorrectly adjusted.
2. Throttle cable incorrectly adjusted.
3. Defective primary regulator and pressure relief valve.
4. Defective oil pump oil seals.
5. Defective rear clutch.
6. Defective center support oil seal rings.
7. Defective valve body.

DRAG, BINDING OR TIE-UP ON 1-2 SHIFT

1. Manual linkage incorrectly adjusted.
2. Defective primary regulator and pressure relief valve.
3. Defective oil pump.
4. Defective brake No. 3 components.
5. Internal transmission failure.
6. Valve body leakage past seals or gaskets, or sticking valves.
7. Defective No. 2 one-way clutch.
8. Accumulator pistons, seals and/or springs.

DRAG, BINDING OR TIE-UP ON 2-3 SHIFT

1. Manual linkage incorrectly adjusted.
2. Primary regulator and pressure relief valve.
3. Defective oil pump.
4. Defective rear clutch.
5. Valve body leakage past seals, or sticking valves.
6. Defective one-way No. 1 clutch.
7. Brake No. 2 defective.

SLIP, SQUAWK OR SHUDDER ON FULL THROTTLE ACCELERATION IN FORWARD GEARS

1. Manual linkage incorrectly adjusted.
2. Throttle cable incorrectly adjusted.
3. Defect in primary regulator and throttle valve.
4. Defective oil pump.
5. Internal transmission pressure leakage.
6. Defective front clutch assembly.
7. Defective valve body.
8. Defective one-way clutch No. 2.

SLIP, SQUAWK OR SHUDDER ON ACCELERATION IN REVERSE

1. Manual linkage incorrectly adjusted.
2. Defective rear clutch.
3. Defective brake No. 3.
4. Sticking valve body valves.
5. Defective primary regulator and pressure relief valve.
6. Defective oil pump.
7. Rear clutch piston leakage.

HARSH UPSHIFT

1. Throttle cable incorrectly adjusted.
2. Defective throttle cam and/or cable.
3. Defective accumulator pistons, seals or springs.
4. Defective clutch and/or brakes.
5. Defective sequence valves.
6. Primary regulator and throttle valve.

NO COAST DOWNSHIFT

1. Defective governor.
2. Defective downshift plug.
3. Defective detent regulator valve.

NO KICKDOWN FROM ANY GEAR OR KICKDOWN OCCURS ABOVE SPECIFIED SPEED

1. Incorrect throttle cable adjustment.
2. Defective governor.
3. Defective downshift plug.
4. Defective detent regulator valve.

NO ENGINE BRAKING IN 2ND RANGE

1. Defective intermediate modulator valve.
2. Defective brake No. 1.

COAST DOWNSHIFT OCCURS TOO EARLY OR TOO LATE

1. Defective throttle cable, or throttle cable is incorrectly adjusted.
2. Defective governor.
3. Defective low coast shift valve.
4. Defective clutch and brake pistons.
5. Defective primary regulator and throttle valve.
6. Defective pressure relief valve.
7. Defective oil pump or leaking seals.
8. Internal transmission pressure leakage.

VEHICLE DOES NOT HOLD IN PARK

1. Manual linkage incorrectly adjusted.
2. Defective parking lock pawl, cam and/or spring.

STALL SPEED HIGHER THAN SPECIFIED WITH CLUTCH OR BRAKE SQUAWK IN DRIVE RANGE

1. Incorrect throttle cable adjustment.
2. Defective primary regulator and pressure relief valve.
3. Defective oil pump.
4. Defective front clutch piston.

STALL SPEED HIGHER THAN SPECIFIED WITH CLUTCH OR BRAKE SQUAWK IN REVERSE RANGE

1. Incorrect throttle cable adjustment.
2. Primary regulator and throttle valve.
3. Defective oil pump.
4. Defective rear clutch.
5. Defective brake No. 3.

TIME LAG BETWEEN NEUTRAL TO DRIVE IS EXCESSIVE

1. Incorrect manual linkage adjustment.
2. Defective primary regulator valve.
3. Defective oil pump and/or seals.
4. Defective front clutch piston.
5. Defective valve body.

TIME LAG BETWEEN NEUTRAL TO REVERSE IS EXCESSIVE

1. Incorrect manual linkage adjustment.
2. Incorrect line pressure.
3. Defective primary valve.
4. Defective brake No. 3 pistons.
5. Defective rear clutch pistons.
6. Defective oil pump and/or seals.
7. Defective rear clutch.
8. Defective valve body.

INCORRECT GOVERNOR PRESSURE

1. Defective governor.
2. Defective governor valve in valve body.
3. Defective primary regulator and/or pressure relief valve.
4. Defective oil pump and/or seals.
5. Defective oil seal rings on output shaft.

LINE PRESSURE HIGHER THAN NORMAL IN ALL RANGES

1. Incorrect throttle cable adjustment.
2. Defective throttle cable or cam.
3. Defective primary regulator valve and throttle valve.

LINE PRESSURE LOWER THAN NORMAL IN ALL RANGES

1. Defective throttle and primary regulator valve.
2. Defective oil pump.

LINE PRESSURE LOWER THAN NORMAL IN DRIVE

1. Defective front clutch.
2. Obstruction in front clutch circuit of valve body.
3. Obstruction in lower valve body ports.

LINE PRESSURE LOWER THAN NORMAL IN REVERSE

1. Defective rear clutch.
2. Defective brake No. 3.
3. Defective center support seal rings.
4. Defective oil pump.
5. Defective rear clutch sequence valve in valve body.
6. Defective brake No. 3 sequence valve.
