Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain coolant, then remove upper radiator hose.
3. Remove air intake connector.
4. Disconnect transmission throttle cable as follows:
a. Loosen adjusting nuts, then disconnect cable housing from bracket.
b. Disconnect cable from throttle linkage.
5. Raise and support vehicle, then drain transmission fluid.
6. Disconnect neutral start and back-up light switch electrical connectors.
7. Remove intermediate shaft with center bearing from driveshaft.
8. Disconnect manual shift linkage and speedometer cable.
9. Remove sliding yoke from gear housing and shift.
10. Disconnect oil cooler lines.
11. Remove front exhaust pipe as follows:
a. Disconnect front pipe from rear pipe.
b. Remove pipe clamp from transmission housing.
c. Disconnect pipe from exhaust manifold and remove pipe from vehicle.
12. Remove power steering gear housing as follows:
a. Remove clamp for power steering oil cooler.
b. Remove clamp for transmission oil cooler pipe at left of cylinder block.
c. Remove clamp for power steering pressure lines.
d. Using tool SST09611-22012 or equivalent, disconnect tie rod ends.
e. Remove gear housing and secure out of way.
13. Remove stiffener plates from transmission housing.
14. Using suitable jack, raise transmission just enough to take weight off rear crossmember.
15. Disconnect ground strap at rear crossmember, and remove rear crossmember.
16. Remove engine undercover, then the 6 torque converter attaching bolts.
17. Install guide pin in torque converter, then remove transmission housing attaching bolts.
18. Pry on end of guide pin to begin moving transmission with torque converter toward rear, then draw transmission downward toward rear.
19. Place suitable container under converter housing, then pull converter straight off.
20. Remove filler tube.
21. Remove rear transmission mount with ground strap.
22. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Measure drive plate runout. If runout exceeds .0079 inch or if ring gear is damaged, replace drive plate, torquing bolts to 58-65 ft. lbs.
b. Temporarily mount torque converter and measure torque converter sleeve runout. If runout exceeds .0118 inch and cannot be corrected by moving torque converter, replace torque converter.
c. Ensure distance from surface of torque converter to front surface of transmission housing is .79 inch.
d. Torque transmission housing mounting bolts to 37-57 ft. lbs.
e. Torque converter mounting bolts to 11-15 ft. lbs.
f. Torque power steering gear housing bracket attaching bolts to 29-39 ft. lbs.
g. Torque transmission oil cooler pipe bracket bolt to 37-50 ft. lbs.
h. Torque oil cooler lines to 21-28 ft. lbs.
i. Torque cooling line bracket attaching bolts to 37-57 ft. lbs.
