Governor: Service and Repair
1. Raise and support vehicle and remove driveshaft.
2. Raise transmission slightly to take weight off crossmember using a suitable jack.
3. Disconnect speedometer cable and remove cable drive gear.
4. Disconnect ground strap and rubber exhaust hanger from crossmember.
5. Remove rear crossmember.
6. Remove extension housing retaining bolts and the housing.
7. Remove outer snap ring and speedometer drive gear from output shaft.
8. Remove inner snap ring and lock ball from output shaft.
9. Remove governor from output shaft as follows:
a. Remove lock bolts, if equipped.
b. Pry up retaining clip using a suitable lever, then slide governor from shaft.
10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure retaining clip is seated in shaft, then torque governor lock bolt to 27-43 inch lbs., if equipped, and stake lock plate.
b. Renew extension housing and speedometer gear adapter seals as needed.
c. Torque extension housing bolts to 20-30 ft. lbs.
d. Fill transmission to specified level, then road test vehicle.
