Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove hood.
2. Disconnect air cleaner hose from air cleaner, then drain coolant from radiator and engine block.
3. Disconnect throttle cable.
4. Disconnect the following electrical connectors, if equipped, from the engine:
a. Air flow meter and oxygen sensor electrical connectors.
b. Solenoid resistor and start injector timer switch electrical connectors.
c. Water temperature sensor and throttle positioner sensor electrical connectors.
d. Cold start injector, air valve and injector electrical connectors.
e. Disconnect engine ground strap and engine electrical harness clamps from engine.
f. Disconnect clamp and electrical connector from alternator.
g. Two grounding straps from engine.
h. Distributor coil wire and radio noise suppressor.
5. Disconnect charcoal canister hose, fuel inlet and outlet lines, heater inlet and outlet hose and brake booster hose. Do not disconnect brake booster portion marked with an arrow.
6. Remove radiator and radiator grille.
7. Remove bolts, air cleaner and air flow meter assembly from engine.
8. Disconnect electrical connector from fan motor, then remove bolts, radiator upper baffle, fan shroud, fan and motor.
9. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove transmission shift lever.
10. Remove engine mount bolts. Using a suitable hoist, raise and support vehicle.
11. Drain engine oil.
12. Remove driveshaft from transmission. Insert tool number 09325-12010 or equivalent, onto transmission output shaft to prevent oil leakage.
13. Disconnect electrical connectors, then remove bolts and starter from engine.
14. Disconnect speedometer and clutch release cables from transmission.
15. Position a suitable piece of wood between engine oil pan and front crossmember.
16. Remove rear engine mounts.
17. Lower vehicle, then using a suitable hoist, remove engine and transmission assembly.
18. Reverse procedure to install.
