Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Remove hood, then drain cooling system.
2. Remove battery.
3. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.
4. Remove cruise control actuator and bracket as follows:
a. Disconnect vacuum hose, then remove actuator cover.
b. Disconnect electrical connector, then remove actuator and bracket assembly.
5. Remove radiator, air cleaner, air flow meter and air cleaner hose assembly.
6. Mark, then disconnect all electrical connections and vacuum hoses from engine.
7. Mark, then carefully disconnect the following EFI electrical connectors:
a. All electrical connectors from left side fender apron.
b. Solenoid resistor electrical connector.
c. Water temperature sensor electrical connector.
d. Start injector time switch and cold start injector electrical connectors.
e. Air valve and throttle position sensor electrical connectors.
f. The remaining injector electrical connectors.
g. Oxygen sensor electrical connector.
h. Engine ground strap.
8. Pull EFI wire harness from right side fender apron.
9. Disconnect and plug heater hoses.
10. Disconnect and plug inlet hose from fuel filter.
11. Disconnect and plug return hose from fuel return line.
12. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
13. Remove clutch release cylinder and hose bracket assembly. Do not disconnect clutch release cylinder lines.
14. Disconnect transaxle control cable as follows:
a. Remove clips and plate washers, then disconnect each control cable from shift and selector levers.
b. Remove clips, then disconnect each cable from control bracket.
15. Remove A/C compressor from engine and position aside, if equipped. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines.
16. Raise and support vehicle.
17. Wrap both front driveshaft boots with clean towels. Remove six attaching nuts from driveshaft while depressing brake pedal, then disconnect drive shafts.
18. Remove power steering pump from engine and position aside, if equipped. Do not disconnect power steering lines.
19. Disconnect from exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
20. Remove front and rear mounts from crossmember.
21. Lower vehicle.
22. Install suitable engine lifting equipment onto engine.
23. Remove engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle.
24. Separate engine from transaxle as follows:
a. Remove front and rear mountings.
b. Remove LH mounting bracket.
c. Remove side gear shaft, then the front drive center shaft.
d. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then the starter motor.
e. Remove transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
f. Separate transaxle from engine.
25. Reverse procedure to install. Torque front and rear mounts to 29 ft. lbs. Torque drive shaft nuts to 27 ft. lbs.
