Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Testing and Inspection


FLUID IS DISCOLORED OR SMELLS BURNT

1. Contaminated or incorrect fluid.
2. Defective torque converter.
3. Clutches and/or bands defective.

VEHICLE DOES NOT MOVE IN ANY RANGE

1. Malfunctioning electrical controls.
2. Improperly adjusted control cable.
3. Defective park lock control.
4. Defective valve body or primary regulator.
5. Defective torque converter.
6. Broken converter drive plate.
7. Clogged oil strainer.
8. Clutches and/or bands defective.

INCORRECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION

1. Improperly adjusted control cable.
2. Defective manual valve and lever.

HARSH SHIFTING

1. Improperly adjusted throttle cable.
2. Defective valve body or primary regulator.
3. Defective accumulator pistons.
4. Clutches and/or bands defective.

NO DOWNSHIFT WHEN COASTING

1. Defective valve body.
2. Defective solenoid valve.
3. Malfunctioning electrical controls.

PREMATURE OR RETARDED DOWNSHIFT WHEN COASTING

1. Defective throttle cable.
2. Defective valve body.
3. Defective clutches and/or bands.
4. Defective solenoid valve.
5. Malfunctioning electrical controls.

NO KICKDOWN

1. Defective solenoid valve.
2. Malfunctioning electrical controls.
3. Defective valve body.

NO ENGINE BRAKING IN ``S'' OR ``L'' RANGE

1. Defective solenoid valve.
2. Malfunctioning electrical controls.
3. Defective valve body.
4. Defective clutches and/or bands.

VEHICLE MOVES IN PARK

1. Improperly adjusted control cable.
2. Defective parking lock pawl cam and spring.

DELAYED UPSHIFTS, OR DOWNSHIFTS 4-3 THEN BACK TO 4, OR 3-2 THEN BACK TO 3

1. Malfunctioning electrical controls.
2. Defective valve body.
3. Defective clutches and/or bands.

SLIPS ON UPSHIFTS, OR SLIPS OR SHUDDERS ON TAKE-OFF

1. Improperly adjusted control cable.
2. Improperly adjusted throttle cable.
3. Defective valve body.
4. Defective solenoid valve.
5. Defective clutches and/or bands.

ERRATIC UPSHIFTS

1. Improperly adjusted control cable.
2. Defective valve body.
3. Defective clutches and/or bands.

NO LOCK-UP IN 2ND, 3RD OR OVERDRIVE

1. Malfunctioning electrical controls.
2. Defective valve body.
3. Defective solenoid valve.
4. Defective clutches and/or bands.

HARSH DOWNSHIFT

1. Improperly adjusted throttle cable.
2. Defective throttle cable and cam.
3. Defective accumulator pistons.
4. Defective valve body.
5. Defective clutches and/or bands.
