Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove front and rear mounts.
3. Remove left hand dust cover.
4. Remove left hand mounting bracket.
5. Remove driveshafts, intermediate shaft, and universal joint as follows:
a. Drain transaxle fluid.
b. Remove cotter pin, dust covers, and bearing locknuts.
c. Loosen nuts attaching driveshafts to intermediate shaft flanges.
d. Remove brake caliper from steering knuckle and secure out of way.
e. Remove disc rotor.
f. Remove transaxle case protector on left hand side.
g. Using tool SST 09950-20014 or equivalent, pull axle hubs from driveshafts.
h. Remove bearing bracket with 2 bolts from cylinder block.
i. Remove intermediate shaft from universal joint.
j. Using tools SST 09520-32010 and SST 09520-32030 or equivalents, drive universal joint out of transaxle case.
6. Remove control cable bracket.
7. Remove stiffener plate.
8. Remove torque converter, dust cover and locking plate.
9. Remove 6 torque converter mounting bolts.
10. Remove starter motor.
11. Remove transaxle mounting bolts.
12. Install suitable guide pin in one of the torque converter bolt holes.
13. Pry on end of guide pin to begin moving transaxle with converter.
14. Separate transaxle assembly from engine.
15. Reverse procedure to assemble.
