Removal

1. Remove right side front wheel.
2. Remove fender apron seal.

Removal Of Alternator Drive Belt:





3. Remove alternator drive belt.

Cruise Control Actuator With Bracket:





4. Remove cruise control actuator and bracket.

Power Steering Reservoir Tank:





5. Remove power steering reservoir tank and drive belt.

Engine Insulator:





6. Raise engine slightly, then remove right side engine mount insulator and bracket. Remove the through bolt, two nuts, and mounting insulator. Remove the three bolts and bracket.

Timing Belt Cover Removal:





7. Remove No. 2 timing belt cover and gasket assembly.
8. Remove spark plugs.





9. Align oil seal retainer mark with center of small hole on camshaft timing sprocket by turning crankshaft pulley clockwise. This will position No. 1 cylinder at TDC of compression stroke.

Loosening No. 1 Idler Pulley:





10. Loosen No. 1 idler pulley retaining bolt and move pulley toward the left as far as possible, then temporarily tighten retaining bolt.

Timing Belt Removal From Camshaft Timing Pulley:





11. Remove timing belt from camshaft timing sprocket.

Removing Camshaft Timing Pulley:





12. Using tool No. 09278-54011 or equivalent, hold timing sprocket in place, then remove sprocket retaining bolt and sprocket.
13. Remove No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring.

Removing Crankshaft Pulley:





14. Using tool Nos. 09213-54010 and 09330-00020 or equivalents, remove crankshaft pulley retaining bolt, then the pulley.
15. Remove No. 1 timing belt cover and gasket assembly.
16. Remove timing belt and belt guide.

Marking Timing Belt For Re-use:





17. Remove No. 2 idler pulley.

Removal Of Crankshaft Timing Pulley:





18. Remove crankshaft timing pulley. If pulley cannot be removed by hand, use two screwdrivers and shop rags.


TIMING BELT INSPECTION

Timing Belt Inspection:





A. If timing belt has signs of premature severance, check for proper installation, timing cover gasket for damage, and correct installation.

Timing Belt Inspection:





B. If the belt teeth are cracked or damaged, check to see if the camshaft, water pump, or oil pump is locked.

Timing Belt Inspection:





C. If there is noticeable wear or cracks on the belt face, check to see if there are nicks on one side of the idler pulley lock. If there is wear on only one side of the belt, check the belt guide and the alignment of each pulley.

Timing Belt Inspection:





D. If there is noticeable wear on the teeth, check the timing cover gasket for damage and check for correct gasket installation. Check for foreign materials on the pulley teeth.

Idler Pulley Inspection:





19. Inspect Idler pulley for turning smoothness. If necessary, replace the idler pulley.

Checking Tension Spring Free Length:





20. Inspect free length of tension spring. Length should be 51 mm (2.01 in). If not as specified, replace the spring.
