Valve Guide: Service and Repair

Break Off The Valve Guide Bushing:

1. Using a suitable tool and hammer, strike valve guide bushing to break it off at cylinder head casting.
2. Remove the snap ring. Heat cylinder head to 176-212°F (80-100°C).

Drive Out The Guide From The Cylinder Head:

3. Using suitable valve guide removal tool, tap out bushing.

Measure Cylinder Head Bore After Head Cools Down:

4. After the cylinder head has cooled to room temperature measure the cylinder head bore.

Bushing Replacement Table:

5. Install the proper bushing as indicated in the table. If the cylinder head bore is more than 0.5224 in. (13.027 mm) then machine the bore to 0.5314-0.5385 in. (13.050-13.068 mm).

Intake And Exhaust Bushing ID:

Using SST 09201-60011, Install New Valve Guide Bushings:

6. Heat the cylinder head to 176-212°F (80-100°).
7. Using SST 09201-60011 or equivalent, drive in the valve guide bushing until the snap ring makes contact with the SST.
