Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Remove shift boot and shift lever retainer attaching bolts, then lift out shift lever.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain cooling system, then disconnect upper radiator hose.
4. Remove air cleaner and starter.
5. Disconnect back-up light switch electrical connector.
6. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then remove exhaust pipe clamp.
7. Remove steering gear housing assembly without disconnecting pressure and return lines, if necessary, then suspend unit from chassis with suitable hanger.
8. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
9. Remove clutch release cylinder.
10. Mark driveshaft and pinion flanges for reassembly, then remove driveshaft. After removing driveshaft install seal replacer tool in extension housing to prevent leakage.
11. Support transmission using a suitable jack, then remove rear crossmember.
12. Lower jack slightly and remove clutch housing attaching bolts.
13. Pull transmission rearward and lower from vehicle.
14. Reverse procedure to install.
