Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery from vehicle.
2. Drain coolant from radiator and engine block.
3. Remove hood and windshield wiper/washer tank.
4. Disconnect air hose, remove air cleaner assembly and air flow meter from engine.
5. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, remove throttle cable bracket from cylinder head cover.
6. Remove accelerator and actuator cable bracket from cylinder head cover.
7. Disconnect ground strap from cylinder head, electrical connectors from oxygen sensor, oil pressure sending unit and alternator.
8. Disconnect high tension wire from ignition coil, electrical connectors from distributor, water temperature sending unit and thermo switch, if equipped.
9. Disconnect starter cables, then Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) connectors (if equipped).
10. Disconnect electrical connectors from solenoid resistor and knock sensor if equipped.
11. Disconnect brake booster and cruise control actuator (if equipped) hoses from intake manifold, then the EGR vacuum hose.
12. Disconnect heater hoses, then the EFI wire harness from ECU.
13. Remove screws, fan shroud and fluid coupling from vehicle.
14. Remove bolts and engine under cover from engine.
15. Remove transmission oil cooler lines, if equipped, bolts and radiator from vehicle.
16. Disconnect hoses from coolant reservoir tank, then remove attaching screws and reservoir tank from vehicle.
17. On vehicle equipped with air conditioning, remove drive belt, mounting bolts and position compressor aside. Do not disconnect compressor lines.
18. Disconnect power steering pump inlet and outlet lines. Remove bolts, pulley, drive belt and pump from bracket.
19. Remove engine mount bolts and ground strap.
20. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove transmission shift lever.
21. Raise and support vehicle.
22. Drain oil from engine.
23. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and remove exhaust pipe clamp from transmission housing.
24. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove clutch release cylinder without disconnecting hydraulic hose and position aside.
25. Remove speedometer cable and on vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect shift linkage from shift lever.
26. On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, disconnect electrical connector from back-up light switch.
27. Remove stiffener plate and ground strap.
28. Disconnect and plug fuel lines and hose.
29. On Supra and except 1984 Cressida models, remove power steering gear housing and suspend from under vehicle with string or wire in such a way as to protect pressure and return hoses.
30. Remove intermediate shaft from drive shaft. Position a suitable jack under transmission. Position a wooden block between jack and transmission pan to prevent damage to transmission.
31. Install a wooden block between firewall and rear of cylinder head to prevent damage to heater hose.
32. Remove engine rear crossmember and ground strap.
33. Using a suitable hoist, remove engine and transmission assembly from vehicle and place in suitable stand.
34. Remove starter and exhaust pipe bracket from engine, then separate transmission from engine.
35. Reverse procedure to install.
