Oil Cooler: Service and Repair
Engine Oil CoolerREMOVAL
EXCEPT FOR STI MODEL
1) Set the vehicle on a lift.
2) Lift up the vehicle.
3) Remove the under cover.
4) Drain the engine oil.
5) Drain engine coolant.
6) Remove the water by-pass pipe between oil cooler and water pump.
7) Remove the engine oil filter.
8) Remove the oil cooler connector and remove the oil cooler.
9) Remove the adapters (1) and (2).
STI MODEL
1) Set the vehicle on a lift.
2) Lift up the vehicle.
3) Remove the under cover.
4) Drain the engine oil.
5) Drain engine coolant.
6) Remove the water by-pass pipe between oil cooler and water pump.
7) Remove the engine oil filter.
8) Remove the oil cooler connector and remove the oil cooler.
INSTALLATION
EXCEPT FOR STI MODEL
1) Install in the reverse order of removal.
2) Touch the adapter (1) knock pin (A) to the cylinder block rib (B) to install the adapter (1).
3) Install the adapter (2).
4) Touch the engine oil cooler stopper (A) to the adapter (2) rib (B) to install the engine oil cooler.
5) When installing the nipple, apply liquid gasket to the nipple screw.
Liquid gasket: THREE BOND 1324 (Part No. 004403042) or equivalent
Tightening torque:
T1: 45 Nm (4.6 kgf-m, 33.2 ft-lb)
T2: 6.4 Nm (0.65 kgf-m, 4.7 ft-lb)
T3: 54 Nm (5.5 kgf-m, 40 ft-lb)
T4: 69 Nm (7.0 kgf-m, 50.9 ft-lb)
NOTE: Use new gasket and O-ring.
ST1 MODEL
1) Install in the reverse order of removal.
2) When installing the nipple, apply liquid gasket to the nipple screw.
Liquid gasket: THREE BOND 1324 (Part No. 004403042) or equivalent
Tightening torque:
T1: 54 Nm (5.5 kgf-m, 40 ft-lb)
T2: 69 Nm (7.0 kgf-m, 51 ft-lb)
NOTE: Use a new gasket.
INSPECTION
1) Check that coolant passages are not clogged using an air blow.
2) Check the mating surfaces of cylinder block, gasket groove, O-ring groove and oil filter for damage.
