High Altitude Modification Kit: Overview
Number: 11-7-82Date: 3-22-82
Applicability: 1982 Vehicles Used Above 4,000 Feet
Subject: High Altitude Kit
General
For your information, this bulletin describes the high altitude kit installation procedure to modify a vehicle from low-altitude to high-altitude specifications. This information is provided to dealers in low altitude areas for information only.
In order to satisfy the high altitude regulation applied to 1982 and subsequent model year U.S. vehicles, installation of a high altitude kit is now mandatory for those vehicles to be used principally in high altitude areas (above 4,000 feet).
An instruction manual is also included with each kit.
There are two (2) high altitude kits:
Kit (1) 483 377 000 Fits Hitachi Carburetor Vehicles
Kit (2) 483 337 100 Fits Carter-Weber Carburetor Vehicles
For Vehicles equipped with Hitachi Carburetors: Kit 1
For Vehicles equipped with Carter-Weber Carburetors: Kit 2
HIGH ALTITUDE KIT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
First, determine whether the vehicle is equipped with a Hitachi Carburetor (Manual Transmission, Automatic, Transmission) or a Carter-Weber Carburetor.
Read all instructions before starting installation.
1) Attach the loop end of the grounding wire to the body using the vacuum switch bracket bolt as shown in Figure 1.
Connect the connector on the opposite end of the grounding wire to the black connector near the vacuum switches protruding from the OEM body harness.
NOTE:
On Carter-Weber vehicles, disregard steps 2 through 6.
2) Locate the gold colored fitting on the rear of the carburetor with a rubber cap over the opening. Remove the rubber cap.
3) Remove the hose connecting the control air filter to the slow duty solenoid. Remove the clamp from the hose and retain the clamp.
4) Assemble the longer hose supplied in the kit to the hose assembly with the "Tee" fitting. Install the OEM hose clamp to the curved end of the tee fitting hose.
5) Install the hose assembly with the curved end of the tee hose to the slow duty solenoid and the straight end to the control air filter. Attach the straight hose to the fitting on the carburetor, (See Figure 2)
6) Secure the straight hose to the OEM Main Duty Solenoid hose using the clamp provided in the kit.
7) EGR Leak Orifice Installation.
HITACHI CARBURETOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES
Remove the 90 degree angle hose installed between the vacuum tubes directly in front of the carburetor bowl shield.
Insert the 1.7 mm orifice (grooved surface) into the 90 degree hose supplied in the kit
Install the new hose and orifice assembly in place of the original hose which was removed. (See Figure 3)
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION VEHICLES
Remove the two (2) rubber caps from the ports on the vacuum tubes located directly in front of the carburetor bowl shield. (As shown in Figure 3)
Insert the 1.0 mm orifice (non-grooved surface) into the 90 degree hose supplied in the kit.
Install the new hose and orifice assembly in place between the 2 ports just uncapped (As shown in Figure 2)
CARTER-WEBER EQUIPPED VEHICLES
Remove the U-shaped hose which is located at the left rear side of the intake manifold, This hose connects the EGR vacuum pipe to the thermovalve pipe and contains an orifice.
Install in its place, the U-shaped hose supplied in the kit.
8) On all models, affix the proper high altitude label to the right side of underhood.
9) Function check.
Check for normal operative function of the system as described in the Subaru Service Manual MSA-11
