OWNER INFORMATION ATTACHMENT:SAAB RECALL NO.286
I. What is the defect?
On certain Saab 9000 CD/CDE models, two (2) of the five (5) brake lights were not properly wired to illuminate when the brakes arc applied. The remaining three (3) - the center, high-mounted brake light and one in each of the outboard rear lamp assemblies do illuminate properly. It is the lower outboard brake light bulbs that do not illuminate as intended. This results in the total illuminated area of brake lights not meeting the minimum required by FMVSS 108.
In the interim before this recall service is done, please follow these precautions:
^ When braking, please remember that the conspicuity of your brake lights to operators of vehicles to your rear is somewhat reduced.
^ Periodically, clean the rear lamp lenses of any dirt that might reduce the visibility of the brake lights.
^ Should you have any concerns, contact your nearest Saab dealer of the Saab Customer Assistance Center (1-800-955-9007).

II. What are the safety risks?
The reduced conspicuity of the brake lights could reduce the likelihood that operators of other vehicles will recognize that you are braking. This might result in a rear end collision without prior warning.
III. What is Saab going to do?
Saab Cars USA, Inc. has made arrangements with its authorized Saab dealers to remedy this non-conformity without charge to you, beginning on June 1, 1994. We urge you to make an appointment with your Saab dealer as soon as conveniently possible. Please bring this letter with you on the day of your appointment.
The dealer will install an additional electrical wire in the taillight wiring harness 10-pole connector located behind the carpet on the left side of the luggage compartment. This will complete the wiring necessary to illuminate both brake light sections in each of the outboard rear lamp assemblies. While this procedure takes about 15 minutes to complete, the dealership may need to keep your car longer because of the flow of work in and out of their service department.
