New Gear Shift Lever Assembly

9000 Models, 1992-


For the 1992 model year, a new gear shift lever assembly was introduced on 9000 models equipped with manual transmission. Due to this change, a new procedure for dismantling, assembling and adjusting the shifter assembly has been developed.

Dismantle/Assembly Procedure

1. Pull/pry the rubber (or leather if so equipped) shift boot from the retaining bezel. Loosen and remove the screws securing the bezel. Remove the bezel.

2. Remove the two front securing screws for the shift lever console (located on the sides of the console).

3. Remove the brush-seal plate for the hand brake lever.

4. Release the power window switch panel and unplug the connectors.

5. Slide both front seats forward and remove the two bolts at the rear of the shift lever console. Remove the ashtray and associated wire leads.

6. Lift off the gear shift lever console.

7. Remove the right side carpet trim panel from the front center console.

8. Remove the retaining screws and slide the rear air duct back.

9. Remove the screws and the front air duct from the heater housing and slide it forward towards the firewall.

10. Remove the plastic cover (anti-slip device) and release the gear lever from the selector rod.





11. Remove the gear lever by using a screwdriver to carefully press in the catches/tabs on the plastic housing (Figure 1). Lift off the shift lever assembly.

Fit in the reverse order. Check the operation of the shift lever.





Checking the Adjustment

Check that the shift lever is correctly assembled.

1. Insert a 5 mm drill bit through the gear lever housing and gear lever with 4th gear engaged (Figure 2). This differs slightly from the previous (-91) procedure as the drill hole is towards the front of the housing instead of on the right side.
