Subject:
Alpine Alarm Remote Transmitter and Receiver Servicing Tips

Application:

The Alpine Alarm System installed on all 1992- 900 Convertibles and sold today as an aftermarket accessory is specified with two remote transmitters. (Note that the 1991 Convertibles were specified with one transmitter only.) Should you ever encounter a transmitter that does not have its ROM chip installed, or need to change ROM chips, follow the guidelines listed below to ensure proper transmitter function.

Parts:

Remote Transmitter 02 46 165
Transmitter Pouch 02 46 215
3 - ROM Chip Kit 02 46 322
*4 - ROM Chip Kit 02 46 496
Replacement Battery:
Sony CR 2025 3 volt lithium
(available locally)
*For optional third transmitter installation

Action:

Installing the ROM chip:

1. Remove the transmitter from its pouch. Lay the transmitter face down.

2. Remove the two # 1 Phillips screws from the back of the transmitter case. NOTE: Some transmitters may have a slightly different screw configuration but the case halves will separate in a similar manner.

3. Lift the back off the transmitter and lay it face down on the work surface (figure 1).

4. Transfer the battery to the back of the case with the "+" side down. Transfer the key-chain ring to the back of the case.

5. Release and slide the ROM chip locking collar in the direction of the arrow on the collar. (Chip will pop up.)

6. If there is a ROM chip in the socket, remove and discard it.

7. Making sure that the locking collar is not tightly secured, slide the new ROM chip into its socket about halfway to the shoulder on the chip with the copper contacts of the chip facing down (figure 2).

NOTE:
If you install it too far the locking collar will pivot up and jam (figure 3).

8. Secure with locking collar.

9. Gently push the chip farther into the socket.

10. Install the front of the transmitter onto the back of the case and snap the two halves together.

11. Install the two screws and press the transmit button to test. The red indicator light will illuminate while the unit is transmitting.

If you ever receive a car which is missing a transmitter, the extra ROM chip or both transmitters, it will be necessary to replace the missing transmitters and pouches. You must also order a 3 - ROM chip kit to recode all of the components (receiver and two transmitters). Should you have a customer desiring a third transmitter, there is a 4 - ROM chip kit available to recode all components (receiver and three transmitters, At this time, three transmitters is the maximum number available.) If you must also recode the alarm module or receiver, follow the steps listed below.

NOTE:
THE LOCATION OF THE ACCESSORY ALARM MODULE ON 900 SEDANS AND 1991 CONVERTIBLES IS UNDER THE REAR SEAT, TUCKED UP UNDERNEATH THE REAR SEAT SUPPORT BEAM.

M92 Convertible Alarm Module Location

1. Locate the alarm system under the rear seat on the driver's side by first removing the rear seat bottom (figure 4). This can be accomplished by lifting straight up at both forward corners with steady pressure. If the seat will not release on one side, try the other side first. Disconnect the single-pole alarm connector from the left rear corner of the seat cushion.

2. Lift the carpet off the seat hold-down horn and fold it down toward the floor to expose the front edge of the rear seat bulkhead on the driver's side of the car.

3. Remove the T30 torx head screw that holds the alarm/central lock package (consisting of alarm ECU, central lock ECU, hazard warning light relay and starter inhibitor relay) to the bulkhead.

4. Carefully withdraw the alarm/central lock package from under the bulkhead.

5. Remove the two T20 screws that secure the alarm module to the bracket and turn the alarm module over (figure 5).

6. Open the access door on the bottom of the module and slide back the locking collar that secures the ROM chip.

7. Making sure that locking collar is not tightly secured, install the new ROM chip about halfway to the shoulder on the chip with the copper contacts facing down.

NOTE:
If you install it too far, the locking collar will pivot up and jam.

8. Secure with locking collar.

9. Gently push the chip farther into the socket.

10. Install the access door and secure the module back into place on the system bracket using the T20 torx screws (figure 6).

11. Slide the Alarm/Central Lock package back under the edge of the bulkhead. It will be a snug fit. Be sure to engage the REAR LOCATING TAB in the slot provided under the bulkhead. You will feel it click into place.

12. Secure the bracket using the T30 torx head screw.

13. Test the alarm and central locking system using the remote transmitters.

14. Reinstall the carpet and the rear seat cushion, being sure to connect the single-pole connector at the left rear corner of the cushion.

NOTE:
Be sure the central lock system fuse is installed before testing or the locks will not function.
