Transmission Throttle Cable

Tool 87 91 980

Application: All 9000 Models (Automatic), 1991-

A change made to the engine's throttle housing on 1991 9000 models requires a minor modification to tool P/N 87 91 980 which is used to set the throttle cable on the ZF automatic transmission. This modification will not affect usage of the tool on 1990 9000 models.

The throttle housing changes removed the notch at the top of the throttle bore and the location of the nipple for the AIC valve hose has been moved from the side of the housing to the bottom. As a result the throttle cable adjustment tool must be modified as follows:

Figure 1:

A. Use a small drift to remove the metal locating pin
(A) from the top of the tool. It is also possible to file the pin down until it is flush with the step for the throttle bore (Figure 1, Side View).

B. If interference is experienced with the nipple for the AIC valve hose at the bottom of the bore, the underside of the tool may be filed to remove excess material. Remove only enough material (3-4 mm) to provide clearance (Figure 1, B).

The procedure for sefting the throttle cable, as detailed in 9000 Service Manual 4, Transmission B234 News Supplement, pages 21-22, remains the same except for one minor change to step 2. Revise your copies of the manual to be written as follows:

2. Fully open the throftle and insert tool 87 91 980 into the throttle housing. Gently close the throttle, allowing the tool to self-center itself. If needed, rotate the tool slightly to align the top of the tool to the 12 o'clock position.
