A/C - Wire Harness Update

CATEGORY: Body

CODE: 854

Subject:
1992 ACC Panel Installed In 1991 Models

Application:
Late 1991 9000 Models

As a running change, 1992 ACC units were installed in a few late 1991 production cars. As part of this change, the wiring harness has been slightly modified. If this wiring modification was not made, there may be customer complaints of the LED beside the rear AC button lighting up at the same time the fan runs at about half speed (fault code 33421 is set). In addition, the ACC panel may light up when the ignition is switched off.

ACC Panel, P/N 40 71 742, may also be used as a service solution for customers of 1991 models complaining of a fault code indication upon start-up. If the 1992 panel is installed, the wiring modifications in this PSI must be made.

A 1992 ACC panel can be identified by the part no. on the label affixed to the side of the unit, P/N 40 71 742, Figure 1.

Parts:

3 Branch Connectors 95 59 998 and 95 60 004
1 Cable Terminal 40 63 970
1 Cable Terminal 91 20 783

250 mm Cable, 0.5 sq.mm
200 mm Cable, 1.0 - 1.5 sq.mm

Both part numbers must be ordered for each connector. Therefore, you will need 3 of each part number for a total of 3 connectors.

Action:

On a 1991 9000 car with a 1992 ACC unit, the cable harness should have been modified, identifiable by the following characteristics. If not, modify the cable harness as described in the Cable Harness Modification procedures.

1. Lead 620A should be cut at pin 1 in the ACC unit's 12-pin connector.

2. A jumper should be present between pins 30 and 32 in the ACC unit's 39-pin connector.

3. The ACC unit's +54 supply should be replaced by the +15 supply via fuse 13 in the electrical distribution box in the glove compartment.

Cable Harness Modification, Figure 2

NOTE

Because different cars have a different cable harness status, the extent of the modification will vary.

1. Disconnect the battery's positive (+) terminal.

2. Remove the ACC unit from the instrument panel. Cut lead 620A from pin 1 in the 12-pin connector.

3. Connect lead 620A to lead 619 using a branch connector to form a jumper between pins 30 and 32 in the 39-pin connector.

4. If lead 620A is not present:

a. Remove the short length of lead and cable terminal from pin 32 in the 39-pin connector.

b. Install a cable terminal, P/N 40 63 970, on one end of a 250 mm long lead. Connect it to pin 32 in the 39-pin connector.

c. Connect the other end to lead 619 using a branch connector to form a jumper between pins 30 and 32 in the 39-pin connector.

5. Remove the glove compartment and electrical distribution box.

6. Disconnect lead 1075A from the input side of fuse 1.

7. Install a cable terminal, P/N 91 20 783, to one end of a 200 mm long lead. Connect it to the input side of fuse 1.

8. Connect the other end to lead 123 on the input side of fuse 13 using a branch connector.

9. Reinstall the electrical distribution box and reconnect the battery's positive terminal.

10. Reinstall the ACC panel.

11. Check the operation of the ACC unit.

12. Reinstall the glove compartment.
