Synchronization, malfunction



Conditions

During 20 000 cylinder combustion cycles at 1700 rpm, no difference between firing and non-firing cylinders has been found.

Note: The diagnostic trouble code may be generated at high engine temperatures in combination with running at idling speed for lengthy periods. In such cases the diagnostic trouble code can be ignored.


Diagnostic procedure




1 Check the spark plugs

- Check that spark plugs of resistor type are used. Specifications The spark plug gap should be 1.0 + 0.11-0.2 mm.

Are the spark plugs OK?
YES Continue with point 2.
NO Adjust the spark plugs, continue with point 2.




2 Check the control module inputs

- Disconnect the brown and yellow leads from the ignition discharge module's connector. Plug in the connector again.

- Ignition switch in the ON position.

- Select command code 303 (-M90) or 203 (M91-) with the ISAT scan tool.

- The SAT scan tool display should show 8B300.

- Connect the yellow control module lead to ground.

- The SAT scan tool display should show 8B200.

- Connect the brown control module lead to ground.

- The ISAT scan tool display should show 8B100.

Test results OK?
YES Continue with point 3.
NO Rectify the lead in question and proceed to point 4.




3 Check the synchronization

- Reconnect the brown and yellow leads.

- Connect the BOB.

- Connect the multimeter set for frequency measurement to pin 19 (red test lead) and pin 13 (black test lead).

- Start the engine and run it at 2000 rpm for 1 minute.

- Run the engine at idling speed.

The frequency should be about 7 Hz.

Is the reading correct?
YES Continue with point 4.
NO Change the ignition discharge module and continue with point 4.

4 Final check

- Clear the diagnostic trouble code.

- Implementation of driving cycle:
Drive the car at varying engine loads and rpm for 5 minutes.

- Evaluation of driving cycle:
Check whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs.

Does the diagnostic trouble code recur?
YES Continue with "Before Control Module Replacement". Service and Repair
NO The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
