Fault symptom
The car runs on basic boost pressure only.
Conditions
If the pressure in the intake manifold is higher than 130 kPa and the knock sensor signal of at least 240 mV is absent for 45 seconds.
Note: It is essential for the knock sensor's connection to be free from corrosion. Use kontakt 61.
Diagnostic procedure
1 Check the knock sensor
- Unplug the knock sensor's connector.
- Connect the test lamp to pin 1 of the female connector and battery positive (B+).
The test lamp should light up.
Result OK?
YES Continue with point 2.
NO Repair or replace the lead in question and proceed to point 2.
2 Check the leads
- Set the multimeter for d.c. V.
- Connect the red test lead to pin 2 of the female connector and the black test lead alternately to battery positive (B+) and battery negative (B-).
The meter reading should change rapidly from negative to 0 V and from positive to 0 V.
Test results OK?
YES Carefully inspect the female connector and the knock sensor's connector for corrosion. If the connections are OK, change the knock sensor. Then continue with point 3.
NO Repair or replace the lead in question and continue with point 3.
3 Final check
- Clear the diagnostic trouble code.
- Implementation of driving cycle:
Drive the car at varying engine loads and rpm for 5 minutes.
- Evaluation of driving cycle:
Check whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs.
Does the diagnostic trouble code recur?
YES Continue with "Before Control Module Replacement". Service and Repair
NO The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
