ISSUE: 04/89-1140
SUBJECT: DRIFT AND BEARING FITTING RING TOOLS FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION REPAIRS

APPLICATION: 900 MODELS WITH 5-SPEED TRANSMISSION, 1989-

Figure 1.:

Two new tools, a drift and a bearing fitting ring, have been developed for replacing the rear pinion bearing on 1989- 900 models with 5-speed transmissions. These new tools are necessary because the pinion bearing and shaft have been enlarged and strengthened.

The new drift is used to remove the outer race of the rear tapered roller bearing from the pinion bearing housing with the aid of an adapter (P/N 83 90 098) and a sleeve (P/N 83 90 148) as shown in Figure 1. A drift, P/N 83 90 106, should be used to remove the front outer race from the bearing housing.

Figure 2.:

The new bearing fitting ring is used in conjunction with a pinion fixture (P/N 87 90 636) to press the roller bearing onto the pinion shaft until it is seated against the stop of the pinion gear (Figure 2). A fitting ring, P/N 87 90 925, should be used when pressing the front roller bearing onto the pinion shaft.
