IF YOU NO LONGER OWN A 1990, 1991 OR 1992 SAAB 900 TURBO REGISTERED IN CALIFORNIA, PLEASE FILL OUT AND MAIL THE ENCLOSED CARD. WE APPRECIATE YOUR COOPERATION.

Dear Saab Owner:

Saab Automobile AB (hereafter "Saab") has determined that your car may not comply with California emissions standards, which require your vehicle to be equipped with a properly functioning on-board diagnostic system. This system has two primary functions. One is to alert the driver, by illuminating the CHECK ENGINE light, that an emissions-related problems occurring or that an emission-related failure has occurred. The other function is to store diagnostic codes in the vehicle's on-board computer, which aid technicians in repairing the problem or failure.

Saab has determined that, undercertain operating conditions, the CHECK ENGINE light may illuminate, signalling that a problem is occurring in the EGR system, even though no fault actually exists. This false illumination of the CHECK ENGINE light may cause you to bring your car in for repairs. A technician, referencing diagnostic codes stored in the car's on board computer, may attempt to solve the "problem" by replacing EGR system components. However, the CHECK ENGINE light could falsely illuminate again at some future time.

In order to prevent or resolve this problem permanently, Saab is recalling potentially affected cars, such as yours. Saab has made arrangements with its authorized dealers to modify your vehicle at no cost to you. We encourage you to make an appointment with your local Saab dealer as soon as possible. For your convenience, a list of Authorized California Saab dealerships is enclosed. Please confirm, when scheduling your appointment, that the dealer will have the parts in stock, and that the purpose of the appointment is for this recall.

The dealer will remove the EGR system from your car's engine, and will replace the on-board computer with a new unit that has been specially calibrated for engines without EGR systems installed. Repairs require approximately one hour to complete. If you should experience difficulty in having the recall performed on your vehicle for any reason, please contact the Customer Assistance Center at Saab Cars USA, Inc. at 1-(800)-955-9007.

After completing the recall repairs on your car, your dealer will give you a salmon-colored "Proof of Correction" certificate. Please retain this certificate with your vehicle registration. You should be aware that under California law you will be unable to pass a Smog Check, or to renew your vehicle registration, until you have had these repairs performed. Your prompt attention to this matter is advised.
