Air Bag Control Module: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The Airbag Control module processes data from the Impact sensors to control the deployment of the Airbags.

CONSTRUCTION
The control module contains a safety sensor of the same type as the front sensor, a microprocessor, a capacitor and the diagnostics unit.

OPERATION
Should a fault develop in the front sensor, the safety sensor prevents it from triggering the airbag in error. Mounting of the control module is direction-dependent. In other words, it must be mounted facing in the right direction.

Each time a trouble code is recorded, a timer in the control module starts. When carrying out fault diagnosis it is then possible to see when the fault first occurred.

Up to five trouble codes can be stored in the memory simultaneously.

Permanent faults are assigned a higher priority than intermittent faults. If an additional fault is to be recorded when five other faults have already been stored in the memory, which is accordingly full, then the trouble code having the lowest priority will be erased to make room for the new fault.

If the control module is not plugged in, the "SRS" symbol in the main instrument display panel's pictogram (SRS indicator) will light up as soon as the ignition is switched ON.
