SUBJECT: MODIFICATION OF THE INPUT SHAFT PRESS RING SPECIAL TOOL
APPLICATION: 900 MODELS M89 WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION
The input shaft for 1989 900 model manual transmissions was revised. Because of the shaft revision, a modification must be made to the two-piece input shaft press ring special tool (P/N 87 90 933). This modification makes the press ring suitable for all Saab 900 5-speed manual transmissions.
The press ring is used to remove the rear bearing from the input shaft. See 900 Service Manual Section 4, page 471-43 for more information.
The procedure below details how to modify the press ring.
Input Shaft Press Ring Modification Procedure
1. Identify the press ring half that has eight teeth.
2. Cut off a one-tooth section at an angle of about 60~ (Figure 1).
3. Remove any burrs from the cut press ring half.
NOTE
The first time the press ring is mounted on an M89 input shaft it may appear to fit improperly. This is normal. The press ring will be adjusted slightly the first time it is used on an M89 input shaft. The fit of the tool will then be improved for subsequent use.
