Air Bag Control Module: Service and Repair








WARNING: Before commencing any work, Service Precautions
When fitting the control module, make sure that the arrows on it point TO THE FRONT. Make sure that the contact surfaces between the control module and bracket are perfectly clean so that a good ground connection is obtained. Make sure that the thicker ground cable is fitted to the right-hand front screw and the thinner cable to the right-hand rear screw.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION: The engine must not be running when the cable is disconnected, since the alternator could then be seriously damaged.

2. Remove the right-hand sound baffle under the dashboard.
3. Remove the floor air duct.
4. Remove the glove box as follows:
a. Open the glove box lid to its lowest position by bending out the restraining arms until the stops disengage.
b. Remove the screws securing the glove box.
c. Withdraw the glove box together with the dashboard vent. Pry carefully with a screwdriver round the vent. Note the positions of the clips. Disconnect the leads for the glove box lighting and the light switch.
5. Unplug the orange 2-pin connector. Unplug the 12-pin connector on the side of the control module's mounting bracket.
6. Undo the screws securing the control module to the mounting bracket. Note the locations of the ground leads.
7. Remove the bracket retaining screws.
8. Undo the cable ties and release the leads from the bracket.
9. Undo the Plastic nut securing the 12-pin connector. Bend the bracket down So that the 12-pin Connector can be removed from the end Plate.
10. Lift out the control module.
11. Fit in reverse order. Tightening torque, control module: 8 Nm (6 lb ft)
12. Remove the lower Storage compartment from the center console. Plug in the SRS tester and clear the diagnostic trouble codes, if any.
13. Start the engine. Check whether the SRS lamp lights up for about six Seconds and then goes out. For cars with a Control module having part # 91 24 074, the engine must be left running at idling Speed for about 15 minutes. Then check whether the SRS lamp indicates a fault (by flashing).
14. Unplug the SRS tester. Fit the lower storage compartment
