Fuel - No Start, Stalling or Poor Performance

89saab02

FILE IN S.I. Man VOL. I

SEC. A-2 PG. 215
SUBJECT: WALBRO FUEL PUMP FEED HOSE REPLACEMENT

APPLICATION: 9000 "S" M88 1/2- 900, 900 "S" M89-
ISSUE: 03/89-1124

FIGURE 1 - WALBRO FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY:

A no-start, stalling or poor performance condition may be caused by a fuel delivery problem as a result of a cracked fuel feed hose inside the fuel tank at the cannister assembly. Previously, a split fuel pump feed hose required the replacement of the complete Walbro fuel pump assembly (Figure 1). The feed hose is now available as a separate spare part.
A fuel delivery problem can be easily traced by making a check of the fuel pump delivery pressure and the delivery flow from the fuel pump. If, after diagnosing the fuel delivery problem, you determine that the fuel pump feed hose is suspect, follow the procedure below.

Parts Required:

Fuel Pump Feed Hose P/N 75 91 571
Hose Clamp (2) P/N 79 68 308

WARNING!

ALWAYS OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON THE FUEL SYSTEM:

^ NO SMOKING.

^ DISCONNECT NEGATIVE LEAD FROM THE BATTERY AND COVER THE TERMINAL POST.
^ HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER NEARBY.

^ WEAR EYE PROTECTION.

^ WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA (USE VAPOR EXTRACTION EQUIPMENT IF AVAILABLE).

^ AVOID PROLONGED SKIN CONTACT WITH FUEL AND WEAR SUITABLE GLOVES.

FIGURE 2:

1. Remove the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank. (900 models - see M89 News Book, page 17. 9000 models - see Service Information section B-2, page 11).

2. Release the hose clamps from each end of the hose. Take care to avoid damaging the nipples. Remove the hose as shown in Figure 2.

FIGURE 3:

3. Position the two new hose clamps on the new feed hose and install on the fuel pump assembly. If necessary, dip the hose ends in warm, soapy water to facilitate installation. Check clamp position and tightness to ensure clearance from the electrical leads (Figure 3).

4. Reinstall fuel pump assembly in the car.

5. Check fuel pump delivery pressure and flow.
