SUBJECT: LIFTER NOISE FROM AIR IN LUBRICATION SYSTEM
APPLICATION: 1988 1/2- 900 AND 9000 MODELS WITH B202 ENGINE
The new design B202 cylinder head introduced in mid-M88 utilizes camshaft oil passages drilled into the head casting. These passages provide for a tighter sealing of the lubrications system. This tight seal also prevents air trapped in the lubricating system from being purged easily. In most cases, any trapped air and resulting lifter noise can be eliminated by allowing the engine to run for approximately half an hour.
However, in some cases lifter noise may persist even after the engine has been run for half an hour. If this occurs, it will be necessary to bleed the trapped air out of the system manually by cranking the engine with the starter after the oil supply bolt to Number 5 camshaft bearing cap has been loosened.
Figure 1:
Procedure for Bleeding Air Trapped in the Cylinder Head Lubrication System
Before using this procedure, make sure that the oil viscosity, level and pressure are correct. Rectify any fault in these areas before attempting to purge trapped air in the cylinder head lubrication system.
Tools Required
Remote Starter Box P/N 02 75 115
1. Remove the valve cover.
2. Loosen the black bolt on intake camshaft bearing cap number 5 (Figure 1). Three or four turns is sufficient.
3. Replace the valve cover using two bolts, one on top and one on the bottom. Place some clean shop towels in the spark plug area of the cylinder head to soak up any oil that may seep out.

4. Connect the Remote Starter Box, P/N 02 75 115, to the TSI socket. Make sure the ignition switch on the starter box and the ignition key are both in the "Off" position and the car is not in gear.
5. Crank the engine for 15 seconds and then pause to allow the battery and starter to recover. Repeat this procedure two or three times.
6. Remove the valve cover and inspect the camshaft bearing bolt loosened in Step 2. There should be evidence of oil that has been pushed past the loose bolt. Tighten the bolt to a torque of 11 ft.lbs. (15 N-m).
7. Remove the shop towels from the spark plug area and carefully clean any oil remaining on the cylinder head.
8. Carefully clean the valve cover sealing surface and then reinstall it using high-temperature silicone seal.
9. Unplug the remote starter box from the TSI socket and start the car using the ignition key. The lifter noise may continue for a few minutes until any air remaining in the lifters is purged.
