Service Information

SUBJECT: COMPLAINTS OF WATER ENTERING CAR
WHEN RAISING THE REAR HATCH ISSUE: 10/86-893

APPLICATION: 9000 MODELS
A water deflector has been introduced to prevent water from dripping on the rear parcel shelf when the rear hatch is opened. The repair consists of a soft rubber shield (and retaining clips) which deflects water to the side when the hatch is opened.

Materials Required

Water Deflector (one per car) P/N 69-58-052
Clip (two per car) P/N 95-08-037

Installation Details

1. Remove and set aside the rear parcel shelf.

Pull away the rubber molding at the top of the hatch opening (see Fig. 1).

FIGURE 2:

2. Remove the two (one on each side) larger cable retaining clips and replace with two new smaller clips 95-08-037 (see Fig. 2). The new clips don't interfere with the installation of the deflector.

FIGURE 3:

3. Use degreaser (contact cleaner) to clean the surfaces to which the deflector will be attached (see Fig. 3).

FIGURE 4:

4. Peel off the paper backing and apply the water deflector to the car body first, starting from the left-hand corner at the point shown in figure 4. Do not start further left than shown by the arrow.

Proceed carefully.

5. Re-fit the hatch moulding over the sheetmetal edge and the leading edge of attached portion of the water deflector.

FIGURE 5:

6. Fit the water deflector to the hatch, starting from the left-hand corner. Fit flush to the edge of the square-section member of the hatch (see Fig. 5).

Re-install the parcel shelf.

NOTE: It is important that no creases form on the surface of the water deflector where it attaches to the metal otherwise water leakage can still occur.
