SUBJECT: MODIFICATION OF GEAR SELECTOR WHEN ISSUE: 02/87-937 INSTALLING REPLACEMENT GEARBOX
APPLICATION: 1986 9000 MODELS WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION
A reverse brake mechanism was introduced into 9000 manual transmissions from VIN Serial No. G1026305 (also batch produced, G1025511-25633). When selecting reverse gear the reverse selector shaft applies the brake to fifth gear slowing down the input shaft.
All replacement transmissions are being built to this latest specification. When installing into an early 1986 model (without reverse brake mechanism), the gear selector must be modified to properly engage reverse gear. See the modification described below.
Modification Details:
1. Draw up the rubber bellows around the gear selector.
2. Move the selector lever towards first gear while lifting up the reverse latch.
Wrap a rag around base of selector to keep plastic shavings out of the gear selector.
3. With the latch lifted up, measure down 15 mm and mark the plastic ball tube. Remove plastic material until lever tube is visible. Be careful not to cut the metal tube.
Try to move the lever towards the reverse position. Ensure that a turning motion can be obtained, i.e. that the movement of the exposed lever tube is limited by the stop in the lever housing.
4. It may also be necessary to remove 2 mm of material from the reverse latch if it is touching the stop in the housing.
Do not perform this modification unless a new transmission has been installed.
Warranty Information: For warranty transmission replacements on early 1986 9000, an additional 0.4 hour Straight Time is allowed for the above modification.
