Speedometer Gears Inspection Procedure

(Gearbox in or out of car)

1. Remove the electronic speed transducer from the guide sleeve, if fitted.

2. Remove the roll pin or screw securing the guide sleeve into the transmission housing.

3. Remove the guide sleeve, together with the plastic driven gear, from the housing.

Warranty Information: For warranty claims, use Failure Coding 47320-02-W-01. Time allowance is Operation No. 47320 (0.3 hr).

4. Determine which type of metal drive gear is fitted to the differential housing by inserting a finger into the hole for the guide sleeve. Try moving the drive gear with your finger. If it is possible to feel the gear move up and down, about 1/4 inch, the early-style drive is fitted. If not, it is the late-style press-fit gear.

5. Inspect the plastic driven gear by counting the number of teeth. Gear 87 23 892 has 13 teeth and should be used with the early-style (loose) drive gear. Gear 87 27 240 is slightly larger in diameter, having 15 teeth, and should be used with the late-style (tight) drive gear.

6. If an incorrect driven gear is fitted, replace it with the proper type, using the gear out of the original transmission if possible. The driven gear can be removed from the guide sleeve by pulling the two pieces apart. Insert the new gear into the guide sleeve and snap the two parts together.

7. Ensure that the o-ring and seal on the guide sleeve are not damaged and refit the gear/guide sleeve into the gearbox housing, securing them into place. Apply thread sealer to the screw, if used.
