SUBJECT: ADJUSTING BASE IDLE SPEED, ISSUE: 02/86-823 PROCEDURE CHANGE

APPLICATION: 1986 9000 Turbo

From Engine Serial No. G017750, the idle adjusting screw has been eliminated from the throttle housing. The hole has been blocked off with an allen screw.

Beginning with these vehicles, the idle speed must now be adjusted by utilizing the throttle stop screw.

NOTE: The system is pre-set at the factory and need not be normally adjusted throughout the service life of the car. However, adjustment may be necessary if engine service work is performed or fuel system components are replaced.

Idle Speed Adjustment

1. Start the engine and allow to fully warm up. The gearbox oil should be warm as well.

2. Connect a tachometer. Be sure that the AC clutch is not engaged and that there are no unnecessary loads on the electrical system (radiator fan, headlights, etc.).

3. Unplug the wire connector at the throttle position switch. Connect a jumper wire through the back of the plug between pin 2 (GR) and pin 18 (SV/VT).

This simulates a closed throttle switch to the LH control unit.

4. Ground the single pole test outlet located in the engine compartment on the left-hand side near the modification I.D. plate.

Use special tool P/N 83-93-894 (LH ground test lead) or similar ground wire.

Basic engine idle speed should be 700 +/- 25 rpm.

5. If an adjustment is necessary, first loosen the screws holding the throttle position switch. This allows for free movement of the throttle plate.

Adjust the idle by using the throttle stop screw to the correct specification.

6. Shut off the engine and readjust the throttle position switch. Correctly adjusted, a click can be heard as the throttle plate is moved from the idle position.

Tighten the screws for the throttle switch.

7. Start the engine and check the idle speed. When the ground wire is removed the idle speed should quickly rise up and settle at 850 rpm.
