SUBJECT: INSTALLING SAFETY CHAIN HOLES ISSUE: 05/86-844 IN TRAILER HITCH

APPLICATION: TRAILER HITCH (P/N 02-72-054) FOR THE SAAB 9000
Early trailer hitches sold by Saab for the 9000 may have been built without holes for the safety chains.

Trailer Hitch P/N 02-72-054

Trailer hitches which are in your parts stock or that may be enroute from Saab must be modified by drilling holes for the safety chains. Hitches already mounted on customer's cars must be modified as well. Notify the purchasers of Saab 9000 trailer hitches not to use their hitch until it is modified.

Do not use the two holes currently located just below the specification plate for connecting safety chains. These holes are meant for attaching emergency brake actuating cables found on surge-type brakes and mechanical trailer brakes.

Modification Instructions:

1. Drilling the hitch (not mounted on car):

Cut-out the template attached to this S.I. and lay against the vertical plate welded to the main hitch tube, just forward of the dead bolt.

Center punch the holes as indicated by the template and drill a pilot hole. Finish the hole by drilling with a 1/2" drill bit.

Remove burrs and paint the holes to prevent rust.
2. Drilling the hitch (mounted on car):

Raise the car on a lift.

Cut out the template attached to this S.I. and lay against the forward side of the vertical plate welded to the main hitch tube just ahead of the dead bolt.

Mark the location of the holes as indicated by the template with a center punch and drill pilot holes. Drill out the holes with a 1/2" drill.

Remove burrs and paint the holes to prevent rust.

3. Point out the correct safety chain attaching holes to the owner of the car.

As a rule, the installation/usage manual supplied with the kit should be given to the purchaser of the hitch. The manual gives the hitch operating instructions.
Warranty Information: For warranty claims, use Failure Code: 98601-04-0-04-05. Labor Allowance for either situation is 0.4 hour which should be entered in the straight time area.
