SUBJECT: NEW AC COMPRESSOR (ALTERNATE SUPPLIER) ISSUE: 08/86-870 RUNNING CHANGE
APPLICATION: 1986 AND LATER 900 MODELS
From the following VIN Serial Nos. a new AC compressor from an alternate supplier was introduced into 900 new car production:
G2025402- G3020900- G7030221-
The new compressor (Seiko Seiki) is of the five-vane rotor type and should contribute to the quiet operation of the AC system. Earlier 16 valve equipped cars may be fitted with the new compressor without modification. Earlier 8 valve cars may also be fitted (M84-) provided that the correct hose assembly with twin tube manifold is mounted in conjunction with the new compressor.
Compressor Servicing Procedures
1. When replacing the new compressor type refer to the procedure given in the 900 Service Manual for the Sanden brand compressor (Section 8, p. 854-38).
2. The procedure for topping-up the refrigerant oil is also the same as that of the Sanden. Draining and filling the oil is carried out, by removing the discharge valve marked "D" on the compressor.
3. The temperature switch which protects the compressor from overheating opens at 300~F. (150~C.) and closes at 2480 F. (120~C.). Faulty switches may be replaced without discharging the system.
4. When measuring the pressure on the high and low sides use the same values which are given for the Sanden (see the shop manual).
5. When fitting a new compressor the R12 must be carefully discharged through the discharge valve marked "D" before removing the protective caps for the pipe connections. This is designed to prevent an excessive loss of oil upon discharge.
6. Use the same procedure as for the Sanden when replacing the compressor clutch, however the removing tool must first be modified.
Carefully chamfer the tool as shown by the arrows in the drawing. As with all power grinding tools, proper eye protection must be worn.
