Service Information
SUBJECT: NEW CAM CHAIN TENSIONER AS A ISSUE: 11/86-909 SERVICE ALTERNATIVE
APPLICATION: 900 MODELS WITH 16 VALVE ENGINES
A new cam chain tensioner has been introduced as a service measure against noise complaints. Use the alternative design when replacement of the standard tensioner does not cure rattles from the camshaft drive mechanism (most noticeable at idle).
Cam Chain Tensioner P/N 75-85-086
Due to initial supply quantities, the new tensioner is now only available as a service measure and won't be production installed until later in the model year.
Do not remove the safety pin (see arrow) before the tensioner has been fitted into the engine.
Installing A New Tensioner:
1. Remove old tensioner from the engine.
2. Thread in the new design tensioner and tighten to 50 ft.lbs. (65 N-m).
3. Remove the safety pin as shown. The tensioning arm is now released.
4. Tighten the small plug nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N-m).
See Page 2 for tensioner servicing procedure
Servicing In-Use Tensioner:
1. If a new design tensioner has been removed for any reason a slightly different installation procedure is required.
Start by pushing the ratchet down and retracting the tensioner mechanism.
