Electrical System & Operating the Top

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Fuses: The 15A fuse in position 12 of the fuse panel protects the circuit feeding voltage to the pump relays.

A ceramic 25A fuse protects the circuit for the hydraulic pump. A spare fuse and the fuse to be installed at the PDI are stored in the main fuse panel.

Relays: Two relays (1 & 2) for the hydraulic pump are located underneath the rear seat, directly in front of the pump.
Wiring Diagram: Contained on last page.

OPERATING THE TOP
General Safety Precautions:

1. Keep hands and articles away from the moving parts of the convertible top.

2. Do not attempt to drive the car unless the top is latched or fully lowered.

3. Remove all objects from the space behind the back seat before raising or lowering the top.

4. Do not raise or lower the top in temperatures of 35 degrees F or lower.

5. Do not store the car with a wet or damp top in the lowered position. Mildew will result.

Hints for Operating the Top:

1. Top operation instructions are fully described in the Owners Manual and the Convertible Parts and Service Training manual, however please note the following reminders.

2. When attempting to lower or raise the backlight (rear window), the top assembly must be first unlatched to reduce tension on the zipper.
3. Never pull down on the top latching handles. Using them as pull down handles will destroy the integrity of the hinge point. To pull down the top, the forward edge of header bow lip can be used.

4. The handbrake must be applied in order to complete an electrical circuit before the top can be raised or lowered.

5. If for any reason the top should fail to raise or lower mechanically, a hydraulic release valve may be used.

The hydraulic valve is located in the front area of the trunk behind a small flap of carpeting. By turning the valve fully counterclockwise, the top may be raised and lowered manually.

The parking brake should be set and the windows and sunvisors lowered.

To raise the top in this manner, kneel in the back seat and grasp the center of the top header bow. Lift upwards, pulling the top into position.

The manual release valve must be fully closed in order for the top to raise and lower mechanically. If while attempting to operate the top the pump motor can be heard but the top is motionless, the relief valve should be the first place to check.
Fitting the 3-Piece Boot:

The pieces of the boot must be secured before driving with the boot in place. The center piece goes on last and comes off first. All 3 pieces must fit under the belt trim ahead of the trunk lid and snap down in front. The center piece must also be fastened with the two rubber straps behind the head rests. Two other safety straps at the trailing edge of the center piece are secured by closing the trunk.

The boot pieces are designed to pack a specific way (see label in bag) into a vinyl protective carry bag. Two elastic straps at the front of the trunk keep the bag from moving around.
Transporting by Commercial Carrier:

If transporting the Convertible by commercial carrier to another location, the following precautions must be taken to prevent damage to the top.

1. The Convertible must be facing forward on the carrier.

2. Place the car on the uppermost level to prevent fluids from other vehicles from dripping on the fabric top.

3. Retain the protective vinyl fabric and re-install on the car if it is going to be transferred by commercial carrier.
