Engine - Surging When Re-Applying Throttle

FILE IN. S.I. Man. VOL. I

SEC. 2 PG. 187

Service Information

SUBJECT: INSTALLING BY-PASS SYSTEM ISSUE: 10/85-796 AS A MEASURE AGAINST NOISE COMPLAINTS

APPLICATION: Early 1985 Turbos

Very early M85 Turbos with manual transmission and a moderate number of Turbos with automatic transmission were built without an inlet by-pass system. The system was introduced on later cars as a running change.

If a customer complains of intake resonance as the throttle is released (automatics only) or there is the existence of engine surging when re-applying throttle in high gear (manual cars), a complete by-pass valve kit may be installed as a service measure.

Do not install a complete kit unless any of the above conditions exist.

By-Pass Valve Kit (Complete) P/N 88-18-056

Installation Instructions:

1. Carefully clean around the connections for the inlet pipes and disconnect the pipes leading into the intercooler from the turbocharger.

Disconnect the pipe and fittings from the air mass meter to the turbocharger and from the intercooler to the throttle housing.

2. Use a drift and a light hammer. Tap out the plug as shown in the drawing.

3. Gently tap in the tubular fitting (P/N 83-69-365) supplied with the kit and seal into place with epoxy. Allow to dry.

4. Assemble the by-pass valve, vacuum hose, elbow connector, valve hose and stand-offs as shown in the drawing.

Fit to the car. Leave the clamps loose until you've positioned the components.

Tighten the clamps.

Connect the vacuum hose and branch pipe at the intake manifold.

5. Re-fit and connect the inlet pipes for the turbocharging system.
