Auxiliary Air Valve (Idle Speed): Testing and Inspection

NOTE: Testing of the auxiliary air valve must be done on a cold engine.
1. Unplug the ECU and auxiliary air valve connectors.
2. Using two separate jumpers, ground ECU connector pins 21 and 17 (yellow/white wire and violet wire).
3. Check for the presence of voltage across the auxiliary air valve terminals. If no voltage is present, check the operation of the system and fuel pump relays. Also check the continuity of the leads (gray and black) to the auxiliary air valve.
4. Remove the rubber hoses from the auxiliary air valve and reconnect the connector. Ensure the valve is open by shining a flashlight into one end of the valve and holding a mirror or white card on the other end. Observe the operation of the valve with the flashlight and card or mirror. The valve should close within five minutes, depending on the temperature of the engine.
5. If the valve does not operate correctly, check the resistance of the valve across the terminals. The proper resistance is 40 - 60 Ohms. If the resistance reading is not to specifications, replace the auxiliary air valve.
