Step A, Step B & Step C

STEP A. Exchange discharged original equipment battery for fully charged late-style Gould battery with twin-box top (M81-late M82 only).

The "old style" Gould battery may be identified by its flat top with a single large decal stating that it is a maintenance free battery. The only projections from the top of battery are the + and - terminals. The new style battery has in addition to the two terminals, two square "box tops" on the top surface of the battery approximately 1/2 inch high. An old style battery cannot be recharged to full capacity once it has been completely discharged and must be replaced with one of the new type.

The new type battery can be recharged to its full capacity from a deep discharge (flat) state. It will accept very little current at first but will gradually recover and respond to charging. Start the process with a "trickle charge" and keep the charge rate at 10 amps or less until the battery is fully charged.

STEP B. Upgrade alternator adjustment link to M82-83 type and tighten V-belt to proper tension (all).

On vehicles not previously updated (see S.I. 10/81-517, Sec. 3, p.49, S.I. Supplement No. 3) install a new alternator adjusting link and adjustment bolt. This arrangement makes it easier to apply proper tension to the alternator belt. S.I. 10/81-517 contains complete parts list, exploded view and installation procedure. Replace the original link using ALL the parts listed.

STEP C. Install "Drive"-idle increase kit (automatics only).

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Unfasten and lift console cover to gain access to neutral safety switch. (It is not necessary to completely remove the cover.)

3. Remove original neutral safety switch and replace With new switch from Kit, P/N 85-46-376.

4. Connect the switch as follows:

Pre-wired M83 vehicles -

a. Attach connector with white & blue with white striped wires to terminal #1 on switch.

b. Connect solid white wire to terminal #2 on switch.

c. Connect yellow with red striped wire to wire of same color from vehicle harness.

d. Connect solid yellow wire to ignition switch terminal vacated when original switch was removed.

e. Connect orange wire to matching wire from vehicle harness.

M81- vehicles not pre-wired -

Install wiring harness P/N 85-84-617 (supplied in kit) containing the orange wire for the connection in Step e. above and black ground wire for the solenoid valve.

a. Insert orange wire through the grommet in the right hand wheel housing. Pull through a sufficient length to pass along the right hand door sill and under the rug to the neutral safety switch.

b. Run the cable across the engine compartment at the cowl. Secure to cowl with clips.

c. Route harness past alternator and under intake manifold to the area under the auxiliary air bypass hoses. Ground the black wire supplied in the harness to the alternator case.

The remaining ends of the orange and black wires will connect to the solenoid valve after it is installed.
5. Adjust switch.

a. Position the gear selector level in neutral.

b. Move the switch until the connector pointer and the line on the switch body (marked "N") line up. (See Service Manual, 03-24-236, Sec. 3, p.364-5.)

c. Tighten the two mounting screws.

6. Reinstall console cover.

7. Remove auxiliary air valve hoses and cut to the lengths needed. (Cutting lengths and diagrams are supplied in the kit.)

8. Assemble the solenoid valve into the cross fitting with threaded brass bushing. (Be careful to avoid over tightening as the bushing will twist in the plastic creating a vacuum leak.)
9. Assemble the valve with cross fitting, short connector hose and remaining T-fitting into the bypass hoses. Connect to the throttle body and auxiliary bypass valve according to the diagram above.

10. Connect the wire leads to the solenoid valve.

11. Reconnect the battery and start engine. Check function of valve by shifting transmission to drive. If the valve functions, idle speed should remain almost unchanged from the Neutral idle speed.
