Throttle Housing - Whistling Sound

83saab01

SUBJECT:
WHISTLING SOUND FROM THE THROTTLE HOUSING, TURBO MODELS

ISSUE: 06/83-633
FILE IN S.I. MANUAL:
VOLUME: I

SECTION: 2

PAGE: 152

A high frequency whistling sound from the engine may occur just when the Turbocharger starts developing boost. This is caused by vibration of the throttle plate shaft seals. The sound is independent of the engine speed and is at a constant level.

Check that the shaft seals are in good condition. Change the seals if necessary. Take care when fitting the new seals, since they can be easily damaged by the threads on the shaft. If the sound persists after the seals have been changed, install two washers, P/N 88-17-199. Check that the return travel time of the throttle from open to closed has not been affected.

Also check that the O-ring of the cold start valve is in good condition.
For cars under warranty repaired as per this S.I.:
Failure Code 24613-11-5-01-05. Enter 50 time units (0.5 hr.) as straight time.
