Throttle Valve - Basic Setting

89saab02

FILE IN S.I. Man. VOL. I

SEC. A-2 PG. 214
SUBJECT: BASIC SETTING OF THROTTLE VALVE

APPLICATION: 900 AND 9000 MODELS WITH LH 2.4 INJECTION SYSTEM
ISSUE: 03/89-1120
The correct basic setting of the throttle valve is important in order for the Automatic Idle Control (AIC) system to properly control the idling speed. If the AIC system is unable to adjust the idle speed to the correct value, the LH system will isolate the AIC function and switch the idle control to the "limp home" setting of between 1200 and 1500 rpm at normal engine temperature.
Basic Setting of the Throttle Valve

Idle speed adjustments are not required as part of the recommended service. Adjustment of the basic setting is only required if:

^ repairs are made to the throttle valve housing.

^ the idle speed is too high (with engine cold or at normal temperature).

^ fault codes 12113 and/or 12114 are stored in the ECU.

Adjusting the Basic Throttle Setting

Use the following procedure to adjust the basic setting of the throttle valve.

Tool required: Idle Adjustment tool P/N 83 94 322

NOTE

The basic idle setting must always be done with the engine cold (68~F or less). If the engine is at normal operating temperature, the gap between the throttle plate and the throttle housing will be too wide for proper adjustment to be possible.

1. Loosen the mounting screws for the throttle position switch (Figure 1). Rotate the switch to the point at which it no longer acts on the throttle plate.

2. Make sure the throttle cable is slack.

3. Using tool 83 94 322, loosen the locknut on the throttle stop screw (Figure 2). Turn the screw until the throttle plate is fully closed (sealing against the inside of the throttle housing).

4. Once the throttle plate is fully closed, turn the screw one-half turn clockwise and then tighten the locknut, taking care not to alter the screw setting.

5. Adjust the throttle position switch back to its normal position with the contacts (Pins 1 and 2) closed at idle. Tighten the switch mounting screws.

6. To check the throttle position switch setting, listen for an audible click as the throttle plate moves from the idle position.
Warranty Information: For warranty claims, use Failure Code 24612-79-0-01-
05. The Labor Allowance is Operation No. 12228 (.2 hour).
