Shift Interlock Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVAL1. Remove steering column knee blocker (Fig. 276).
2. Remove the two steering column to support bracket nuts and lower the steering column (Fig. 277).
3. Remove the two screws retaining the interlock mechanism to the column (Fig. 278).
4. Unsnap the mechanism from the column.
5. Disconnect the BTSI solenoid connector (Fig. 279).
6. If so equipped, disconnect the BTSI solenoid/cable retainer from the mounting bracket (Fig. 280).
7. Place parking brake in the up position.
8. Place gearshift in the Autostick position.
9. Remove gearshift set screw.
10. Using a trim stick, disengage gearshift bezel from lower console.
11. Disconnect bezel lamp connector.
12. Remove front console retaining screw.
13. Open console bin cover and remove console retaining screws (Fig. 281).
14. Carefully remove console from vehicle.
15. Move ignition key to the Run position.
16. Disconnect the interlock cable from the gearshift mechanism.
17. Remove the interlock cable from the gearshift mechanism (Fig. 282).
18. Remove interlock cable from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: The gearshift cable must be secured into position and properly adjusted before the installation of the Shifter/Ignition Interlock Cable.
1. Snap the interlock cable base assembly into the large square opening in the steering column.
2. Secure the plastic base with two self tapping screws (tighten upper screw first) (Fig. 278).
3. Route the interlock cable down the steering column, below the radio/climate control to the gearshift mechanism.
4. If equipped, install the BTSI solenoid/cable retainer to the mounting bracket (Fig. 280). Connect BTSI connector (Fig. 279).
5. Slide the interlock cable core wire into the groove on the adjustment lever (Fig. 282). Ensure the cable end seats in the groove.
6. Slip the cable into the gearshift mechanism bracket (Fig. 282) until it snaps into place.
7. Ensure the shift lever remains in PARK. Remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder (switch in OFF position).
8. Release locking clip (Fig. 282) from interlock cable to allow cable to self-adjust. It is not necessary to remove clip entirely.
9. Push down on clip to secure adjustment.
10. Install and tighten steering column-to-support bracket nuts (Fig. 277) to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
11. Verify proper operation of shift interlock system. If shift interlock system doesn't operate as intended, Refer to SHIFT INTERLOCK - TESTING AND INSPECTION.
12. Carefully install console to vehicle.
13. Install and tighten one front and two rear console retaining screws.
14. Connect bezel lamp connector to gearshift bezel.
15. Install gearshift bezel to lower console.
16. Place gearshift lever into the Autostick position and install gearshift handle.
17. Return gearshift lever to Park.
18. Return parking brake lever to the rest position.
19. Install steering column knee blocker trim panel (Fig. 276).
