Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Remove rocker arms, rocker arm shafts and camshaft in numbered sequence, Fig. 24, noting the following:
1. Before removing rocker arm and shaft assembly, install lash adjuster holder No. MD998443 or equivalent, Fig. 25. Tag rocker arms and lash adjusters according to cylinder number for assembly reference.

INSPECTION

1. Inspect camshaft journal surfaces for damage or seizure, replacing as necessary. If journal is seized, check cylinder head for possible damage.
2. Check camshaft cams for wear or damage, replacing as necessary. Ensure lobe height is within specifications.

INSTALLATION

Reverse removal procedure to install, noting the following:
1. Install oil seal (11) as follows:
a. Apply engine oil to oil seal lip.
b. Using seal installation tool No. MD998364 or equivalent, drive oil seal into cylinder head.

2. Install rocker arm and shaft assembly as follows:
a. Install lash adjuster as shown, Fig. 26, using care not to spill oil which is inside it.
b. Install lash adjuster holder No. MD998443 or equivalent to hold adjuster in place while installing rocker arm and shaft assembly.
c. Install rocker arm and shaft assembly on cylinder head, then tighten bearing cap bolt.
d. Remove lash adjuster holder tool.
3. When installing semi-circular packing, apply liberal amount of gasket sealant onto circumference of packing.
