SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Subject model vehicles may experience water leaks in three different areas as follows:
^ Along either side sill of vehicle.
^ At right or left kick pad from insufficient sealer where side cowl panel meets toe board.
^ At left kick pad from insufficient taping where main wiring harness enters passenger compartment.
DIAGNOSIS
All water leak repairs rely on proper diagnosis. This usually requires one technician to run water along the suspect area, and an assistant inside the vehicle to observe the exact location where the water enters the vehicle.
Use the following procedures to detect leaks in three suspect areas.
FIGURE 1:
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Leaks occurring along sill may be due to undercoating/wax injection, etc. plugging sill drain holes (Figure 1).
To diagnose, run water in cowl. If water enters the vehicle anywhere along the side sill, check the drain holes as shown in Figure 1 and remove any undercoating/wax injection in drain holes. This can be done with a screw driver and compressed air.
FIGURE 2:
At Right or Left Kick Pad From Poor Side Cowl to Toe Board Seal
Water may enter vehicle at the cowl side to toe board seal (Figure 2).
To diagnose, run water down "A" post and around upper door hinge areas shown in Figure 2.
Look for water entering the vehicle at the seam where the side cowl meets the toe board. If water is entering, reseal with RTV or similar sealer as shown in Figure 2.
FIGURE 3:
At Left Kick Pad From Poor Seal Where Main Harness Enters Passenger Compartment
Water may enter vehicle through the main harness grommet because of insufficient tape on wire harness.
To diagnose, run water over main harness at grommet as shown in Figure 3.
If water enters the vehicle through the main harness grommet, tape back approximately 5 cm (2 inches) with vinyl tape as shown in Figure 3.
