Intercooler: Description and Operation

PURPOSE

The charge air cooler cools intake air from the turbocharger before it enters the engine, providing for a denser air charge for increased engine performance.

OPERATION

The Charge Air Cooler (CAC) is mounted next to the radiator. Since considerable heat is added to the air during compression by the Turbo, the air is cooled by routing it through the (CAC) which is a heat exchanger. This reduces the possibility of preignition and engine damage from overheating.
